I renewed my childrens medicaid application a Month back.i recieved a call from a representative and went through questions and she said the kids were no longer qualified to recieve medicaid because i now have a vehicle thats worh $8000?
Can anyone confirm that this is part of the rules or were we short handed? I have a house with equity im suprised they didnt disqualify me because of that as well.
As far as the vehicle, its a loaner car. A relative let me use it until i can find employment again.all he asked is i register under my name since the tags were out.and now because its under my name my kids are without medicaid.i now have no choice but to give it back. Any suggesstions on this anyone??

It doesn't matter if it's a loaner car or you just got the title because the tags were out or however else you want to spin it. As soon as you took legal ownership of that vehicle (got the title, in other words), you got an 8000 dollar windfall. That car is the same thing as income. As it should be.

Think about it this way. If I gave you a million dollars worth of gold, should you still be on medicaid? I didn't give you any money, right? Of course, the state doesn't track gold like they track cars but you get my point?

In retrospect, it should not have been in your name, since the car was not meant to be yours permanently. But there was no way of knowing there would be consequences for the children. Sounds like you can't have any car worth much of anything and still have Medicaid for the children. Catch-22, transportation for looking for work...or Medicaid.

If you have much in assets, you will not get it. Which is the way it's supposed to be set up.

Perhaps you should purchase health insurance for your kids. I've been doing it ever since the day mine were born.

If its your primary vehicle, then the value doesnt matter. A second vehicle worth over 5000 dollars is counted as an asset will disqualify you

A whole lot of working taxpaying types drive cars much cheaper than $8,000 -- it really doesn't seem right for those on welfare handouts to be driving the more expensive cars while those who head to work are driving the $600 clunkers.

My car is worth less than $8000. I pay over $1500/month to Aetna for health insurance.
