The drive from Midland/Odessa to San Antonio via I-10 seems like the longest drive in the world. I try to drive it as little as possible.

Yep, it is long..I've done it many times.....try driving from Farmington, NM (northwestern corner) to Alamogordo, NM to El Paso and then to San Antonio/Austin.....I had a great time and enjoyed the drive the whole way, though I was beat!

I broke the trip up in Ozona off of I-10 and drove from there to Austin the next day. Still a great drive. I got to see everything from mountains/desert to the wildflower-bedecked Texas Hill Country.

I was stationed in Del Rio back in the 1980's and always wanted to run Highway 90 all the way out to El Paso... Burned up Hwy 90 to San Antonio but never got past the Pecos River headed West. Sigh... IMHO, Highway 90 is a good alternate to I-10. Have a great trip!

I think no matter what road you take out there, it's easy to take time and appreciate what's there. And we should. Really, it's a great part of Texas that we take for granted because it is so isolated.
