I'm a newbie from Chicago. A rule I think all transplants that move anywhere should go by is to not upset the locals. They've been here longer and know what's acceptable and what's not. I've enjoyed my year here. I've made Texas my home.

I am generally welcoming but have been known to bite a few heads off for XXXX poor attitudes.

I voted NO - but that's because there weren't more choices. I really like new people - I feel like the best tourist guide in town for a new transplant or visitor. I like that they notice differences and are willing to embrace those differences. What I dislike tremendously are ALL THE DRIVERS...but to me, faceless drivers are a different beast.

I try to go by the individual, but to agree with everyone else, I don't like it when these folks decide to put us all down. What could be gained from that??? And I would hope newcomers would realize that not all stereotypes hold true - it really is case by case. Just because I have a slight accent, for example, doesn't mean I'm less educated. I'm amazed that "some" folks thinks thats true. Yowza.

So, come one, come all - learn how to drive - complain how you didn't realize how hot it would be - and ENJOY as much as you possibly can, while realizing that it's not supposed to be like back home.

There's a great quote in the movie A Walk in the Clouds -- "Just because I speak with an accent, doesn't mean I think with an accent!"

Very true.

Thats how I feel too. I didnt vote in the poll either because none the choices quite exactly matched my feelings.

I voted it doesn't matter. There are advantages and disadvantages. It's good to meet different people and hear different perspectives. There are always things to improve. It's bad to hear people talk about how their home state is better or try to change Texas to be just like their home state. It's okay if you say certain things are better in your home state, but there should be certain things that are better here as well or else why are you here? You get a break on the climate though; we all know the climate here sucks.

Well summed up, my friend.

Like you, I too agree with sis Cathy and LoneStar and THL. That is to say -- if I read it right -- the missing option (and best one!) would have been along the lines of (but could be shortened!):

Welcome to Texas if you want to become one of us. If Not? Go Back Home!
