Austin was from southwest Virginia, Crockett was from Tennessee, Travis was from South Carolina, and Houston was also from Virginia. All great and heroic men for sure, but none of them were Texans and did not come to Texas until they were way into adulthood.

These brave men were a great start to our Texas history! They made great contributions for us obviously. I was not born here, but I am Texan. And plan never to leave, unless driven out. Yes, Mom2Feebs, they lived Texan! I just have a deck, but I defy anyone to say I am not!!

And you most definitely are, lilypad! It can start with being born here but heck, none of us chooses where we are born. I'm proud to be a Texan and I'm proud to live here but as far as the fact of my being born here I can only say, "By the grace of God!"

and thanks for putting the EYE -WITNESS NEEEWWWSSSS guy up there--one of my favorite memories of Houston (about the only one)....

TEXASREB--why would you call Quakers "celebate"---they weren't any more than anyone else --they married and had children---maybe you are thinking of the Shakers who lived celebate lives and had to get all their new members from converts since they did not "grow" their own...

Quakers actually were encouraged to be celibate--a big reason why they dwindled so fast!

How about a modern-day Texas hero? It's sports-related, but he definitely would qualify. Tom Landry, former Cowboys coach.

Nolan Ryan - when we were in Cabo a few weeks ago we went into a sports bar and they had a SIGNED Nolan Ryan Astros jersey.
