The Great lakes region can have the 3rd coast moniker to market itself. I prefer Gulf Coast to third coast. I think the 3rd coast is a term of derision not descriptive or one that communicates to anyone unfamiliar with the term and it takes more letters to say than Gulf does. I dont care for the term for the gulf coast as I mentioned above.

I keep seeing Beaumont rated way up there but evidently the Gulf Coast dominates.
A lot of oil moves through Beaumont. I assume that that is import and export, domestic and foreign? There is also a lot of barge traffic there....

Southeast Texas is rocking it with 6 Ports.
Houston, Galveston, Freeport, Beaumont, Port Arthur and Victoria are all up there. This is the biggest port region in the US and third largest in the world.

The expanding port in Corpus Christi may soon outdo Houston on these charts.

Heh, maybe if your definition of 'soon' is in geologic terms or something....
Houston is at 227 mil tons, CC at 73 mil tons
Houston increased by 22% over the last decade, CC decreased by 9 % over the last decade.

CC did see a 7.9% increase in 09-10, but Houston saw a 7.5% increase at the same time.

I want some of what you are smoking. You think its Corpus alone that s expanding?
Panama Canal expansion means big changes at Port - Houston Chronicle
Quote:
Two words sum up what the Panama Canal expansion means to the Port of Houston: game changer.....

Today, ships of about 5,000 TEUs can fit through the canal. By the time testing is complete on the canal by 2015, ships of about 12,000 TEUs will be able to transit the famous shipping lane.......

To explain its significance to Houston, Moseley points to a wall-sized map of the U.S. hanging in his downtown office. Midwest cities such as Chicago get many of their Asian goods via rail from the West Coast. After the canal is expanded and larger ships can transit the canal, those Asian goods can come from Houston, which is closer to the Midwest.

"We just happen to be in the epicenter of this service area between the Rockies and the Ohio Valley," said Moseley, who is among 18 Houston business and political leaders traveling to Panama this week on a trade mission organized by the partnership......

Bigger ships that sail from Europe to the Gulf of Mexico and don't have to traverse the Panama Canal already have started calling at the Port of Houston - several years earlier than a consultant had forecast.

In April, ships as large as 8,100 TEU began arriving at the Bayport Container Terminal, where the record had been around 6,500 TEU.

"We were caught unawares," said Port Authority CEO Alec Dreyer. "It's very exciting but it also causes a lot of apprehension."

To prepare for the even larger ships expected to come through the canal and on to Houston, the Port Authority must refurbish the Barbours Cut terminal in La Porte, built more than three decades ago when ships were smaller. That renovation, which will happen in stages, will include installation of larger cranes.

The Port Authority also must deepen the channels to 45 feet from 40 feet at the Bayport and Barbours Cut container terminals.
they have started expansion without federal help:
Port of Houston moves forward with channel deepening plans - Houston Business Journal
Quote:
On Oct. 23, the port commission agreed to submit a permit application to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to deepen its Barbours Cut Channel to a depth of 45 feet from its current depth of 40 feet. The channel will also expanded to fit larger vessels, including the largest ships on the market.
Len Waterworth, the port’s executive director, told the Houston Business Journal earlier this month that with a depth of 45 feet, the channel will be able to fit the largest ships on the market. However, the depth still will not allow for the ships to be at full capacity.
The port has decided to spend its own money instead of waiting on federal funds to improve and deepen its Barbours Cut and Bayport terminals to accommodate these larger ships,
Don't kid yourself. Every Port from Mexico to Savannah are expanding, but who is already able to handle the big stuff?

All these Ports will grow, but Houston's is already Huge and getting bigger. You may have heard that Eagle Ford may boost exports at CC, but guess where it will also boost?
