Very few people get to have it all, agree?

Lots of people would like to live in Hawaii. But their quality of life would suck because they wouldn't have a job. They would marvel at the beauty, but would be driving an old rusted Ford Ranger and wondering how to get money for surfboard wax.

For a millennial - especially one fresh out of college, getting a good financial start is damned important. Texas is a great place for many to do just that.

Not to mention Houston has a pretty high quality of life (better than Dallas).

- The grape nut Cali (grapes of wrath in reverse) transplant dude or duddete who wants to move here because they think Austin is "ok" & because it's "not like the rest of Texas". I was suggesting they should lose the Socialist Dogma & Grape Nut pretense.....or just stay put on the left coast.

- & also the Texas posters who (for whatever reason) like to crack down on Austin. (I never understood this). They think that Austin has a superiority complex, or is somehow significantly different than SA/Big D/Htown (it isn't) & they enjoy pulling out 30 year old Austin stereotypes. (newsflash: the hippies are dying off....unfortunately the hipsters aren't)

Rialise, you & I both know that in Wilco, both east & west of 35 are good places to raise kids. (& we both recommend them often). I was just stating that when looking in Austin, better neighborhoods for kids & schools in the city of Austin...... are typically found west of Mopac. (& I'm not saying that Austin High & McCallum aren't good since we both know they are good & that they're a few steps east of Mopac) I was just stating to the transplants that there are some cr*p areas of Austin, just like there are some cr*p areas of Dallas, SA & Htown.

There are plenty of great schools West and East of I-35 within Austin as well. The most significant reason the schools west of Mopac score higher on standardized tests is mostly due to the fact that the students in these schools are largely affluent with highly-educated parents (and all of the resources that comes with that).

AISD as a whole isn't a bad school district, especially when compared to other urban school districts in Texas and nationally.

The problem is that there isn't political or public will in Houston to improve quality of life, because of the widespread belief that Houston is the best city ever. That's why Houston doesn't have commuter rail and no plans to build it. That's why Houston is the strip mall sprawl capital of the country. That's why pollution violations are allowed on the Gulf.

Houston and DFW have practically identical QOL. some lists rank Houston higher, others rank DFW slightly ahead. its a matter of opinion. but keep telling us about how bad Houston sucks..

in terms of the CITY (not metro, for the people living in Dallas and Houston proper) quality of life in Houston ranks quite a bit higher, coming in at 22nd (2nd best in Texas.. Austin obviously took the #1 spot in the state), Dallas ranks 41st.

There's nothing stopping Houston from being a nice place to live for those millennials. Get serious about rail, set up more parks, get sensible about highways, introduce zoning so a nice neighborhood doesn't get a massage parlour for a neighbor.
