I moved back to Houston in 2012 for a job. Sure as hell didn't mean I wanted to live there.

The people I've known who love Houston are the ones who grew up there and never left, not people who have lived in cities with higher quality of life and then moved to Houston. Preferring to have a decent job isn't the same as preferring a city.

I grew up in Houston, but then left for NYC for 5 years and Chicago for 3 after that. I moved back 4 months ago and couldn't be happier, granted people's individual mileages and tastes my vary. Just saying that some people really do prefer it here.

There are always going to be those kind of Houston haters.

If they're not happy in their current dwelling they're free to pack up their belongings & leave. Just stop whining about it & man up. Find a job somewhere you would enjoy living if Houston isn't for you.

Note that I said *higher quality of life* which doesn't include NYC and Chicago

You just hate when people don't own the rose colored glasses you see through.

I can definitely see the influx of young people moving to SA. Having lived in Southtown for 5 years now and seen the large transformation into an urban walkable/bike friendly environment. You can still rent a place for under 1k a month in Southtown next to the riverwalk and be under a mile from downtown. Not that you need to go downtown, because Southtown has many of the cities best bars and restaurants. The Pearl is another story, but again that area is packed with young professionals.

I think that article does a poor job of getting to the potential reasons for the story line.

First - Austin has 50,000 millennials already in the city, with one fourth of them replaced every year at UT. Many of these want to stay and compete for the jobs that others outside Austin want.

It is silly to think that Millennials might move to San Antonio because of the Alamo, the Riverwalk, and Sea World. But they will move there if there are jobs and they can afford to live there.

Austin rents are very high now and supply is very low.

Houston has lots for a millennial, starting with jobs. My son works in Houston, lives in mid-town, all because he found a finance type job there. He couldn't find a job like that in Austin.

Austin has become too trendy. It's been the "it" place to be for quite some time. I could recognize it as a kid growing up in Dripping Springs. I'd gladly take San Antonio over Austin. Still right on the edge of the hill country, just as many big city amenities, a professional sports franchise (ok, UT football might as well be, but they've been down in the dumps for several years now), and I feel lots more potential/economic opportunity with the Eagle Ford booming.

Houston is just kind of "meh" to me. No doubt it's a phenomenal city and economic powerhouse in its own right. It's just too expansive for my tastes. I mean, from Kingwood to Rosenburg, Conroe to damn near Galveston Island, Katy to Baytown, it's all sprawl. The last undeveloped area anywhere near the city of Houston itself is on 90 heading out towards Crosby.
