Good whuppins -- Texas style! (versus, trees, phone)

Hey Y'all -- I just thought of another Texas whuppin' story for your amusement. When I was a very small child my mother used to "get after me" with a fly swatter. This was a most ineffectual form of spanking that never really resulted in any enduring modification of my behaviour and merely served to underscore her own frustration. My dad on the other hand would occasionally and unpredictably get into a fuming anger which he would signal by pulling his rings off and giving me a more painful spanking with his hand on my bare buttocks (later with a belt). These episodes were emotionally over-wrought and merely succeeded in leaving me with a lot of suppressed resentment and a dislike of my father. The charge against me that brought about these punishments was invariably "insubordination" (being attitudinally disrepectful as he perceived it). In like manner he had sudden explosive outbursts at my mom, though these were limited to verbally biting her head off, again for some perceived nagging on her part. It took my father many years to mellow and although he was normally a highly controlled individual, I would strongly suspect that his occasional angry outbursts were not entirely unrelated to his history of having endured a long imprisonment by the Chinese during the Korean War, in which he was singled out for treatment as a war criminal, kept in solitary confinement and repeatedly interrogated and brutalised (he'd been shot down in a small aircraft doing artillery reconnaisance and the Chinese accused him of spraying bacteriological agents from the aircraft). He was one of the last POWs released after the armistice.

Sorry, "whuppin's" aren't always something to make light of.

In your case;no, because you turned this into a psychological issue. Sorry about your life, but your looking too deep into this.

I don't agree. I think doctorjef looked into it to a completely appropriate depth. It goes to show that ill treatment often begets ill treatment. It IS a "psychological issue", both for dj's father and him..

A real whippin is when you did something bad, and the neighbors or family friend found out about it; they would whip yo azz before your parents got home, told your parents they whip'd u and then your parents would wear that butt out.
You see thats when adults held other kids accountable for things unlike today where everybody wants to be the kids friend or scared of CPS.

Did I push a button? How come you didn't comment on my post regarding lower SES African-Americans using extension cords to administer whippings and the conceivable historical link to the history of physical brutality under slavery?

Do you understand that I'm trying to rock the boat of your secure assumptions about the world and shake you up from your self-satisfied complacency?

Actually you didn't push no buttons; I respected your story and never said you were wrong to feel the way you felt.

However, the way you placed it was that your fathers "abusive?" behavior steamed from the war. My dad was from the war and rarely whooped us, but my mom did all the time and I suffered no type of resentment or ill feelings toward her. I just think were looking at this whole whuppin situation from two different perspectives.

'I remember it was that way for me too! Had to behave myself at my friends' houses too. Their parents would spank our butts just as easy as our own parents would. The the parents would call our parent(s) and tell 'em what had happened and why we got spanked. Then when we got home, we'd get it again! A kid learns real quick to behave himself/herself.

I never was physically punished by anyone else's parents, but my parents would certainly let me have it if they were told I behaved badly.

I just meant that when our friends' parents disciplined us, it was usually a pop on the butt and then we'd be sent home. Times were different when I was a kid. Other folks could pop a kid on the butt and not have to worry about accusations and/or allegations of child abuse.

Now the discipline from the nuns in my Catholic school in Texas was a whole different thing...(and has already been discussed in another thread here at City-Data).
