There's definitely a lot of liquid nourishment going on after hours. But during the years I taught in Texas I didn't know any who used drugs. Obviously there are some like in any other profession. But it wasn't very open and certainly not something you'd ever see at social events with other teachers. Margaritas on the other hand....

In my youth I used to partake of the mary-wanna. Hey, it was the '70's. But, my military years put a stop to that P.D.Q. Then, later, I worked in the DoT (Dept of Transportation), and was still subject to random pee-testing. Fact is, my career prevented me ever using an illegal substance again. And I complied. It's just what one is supposed to do when you play by the rules.

Texas DPS officers told not to arrest in low-level marijuana cases after new hemp law....

By JOLIE MCCULLOUGH, Texas Tribune | Posted: Wed 7:20 PM, Aug 21, 2019

AUSTIN, Texas (Texas Tribune) Texas' largest law enforcement agency is moving away from arresting people for low-level marijuana offenses.

It's the latest development in the chaos that has surrounded pot prosecution after state lawmakers legalized hemp this year.

As of July 10, all Texas Department of Public Safety officers have been instructed to issue a citation for people with a misdemeanor amount of the suspected drug — less than 4 ounces in possession cases — when possible, according to an interoffice memo obtained by The Texas Tribune.

The citation requires a person to appear in court and face their criminal charges.

Those issued a citation for misdemeanor charges still face the same penalties if convicted — up to a year in jail and fine of $4,000.

Video shows arrest that led to local superintendent’s resignation

By Christopher Shadrock | Posted: Mon 4:12 PM, Aug 26, 2019 | Updated: Mon 4:26 PM, Aug 26, 2019

WACO, Texas (KWTX) Video obtained Monday by KWTX shows the misdemeanor marijuana arrest following a late-night traffic stop that led to the resignation of Waco ISD Superintendent Marcus Nelson

He was arrested late on the night of March 6 after a Department of Public Safety trooper on routine patrol spotted a 2007 GMC Yukon traveling north on U.S. 190 south of Hearne in the left lane and not passing.

The trooper pulled the Yukon over, smelled marijuana, searched the vehicle, seized a small quantity of the drug and seized it, authorities said.

On the video Nelson tells the trooper he was returning from Houston and initially says “No sir” when the trooper asks if there was anything illegal in the video.

“You sure?” the trooper asks, “Because it smells like weed.”

Nelson asks the trooper to cut him a break as he’s ordered to step out of the vehicle and tells him he’s going to search the vehicle.

“You’ve got something in the car, don’t you?” the trooper asks.

“Yeah,” Nelson replies, “and I can’t get ruined over this.”

“You’re not going to get ruined,” the trooper says.

“Yeah,” Nelson said, “my career is going to be over.”

Waco: School Board approves offer to hire next superintendent

By Rissa Shaw | Posted: Thu 8:09 PM, Aug 29, 2019 | Updated: Thu 11:05 PM, Aug 29, 2019

WACO, Texas (KWTX) The Waco School Board approved an offer to hire Dr. Susan Kincannon as the district's next superintendent with a 5-2 vote Thursday evening.

Her contract runs from September 5, 2019 to June 30, 2022 with an annual salary of $252,500.

Her predecessor, Dr. Marcus Nelson, who resigned in March following a misdemeanor drug charge, was making $272,000 a year.

Kincannon was selected as the finalist from among 84 applicants earlier this month.

Kincannon is a graduate Copperas Cove High School who received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, a master’s degree in educational administration from Tarleton State University, and a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from Baylor University.

Prior to becoming the Waco ISD Superintendent, Kincannon served as the Belton ISD superintendent where Angela Tekell, President of the Waco ISD Board of Trustees, serves as the district's attorney.
