You can live without a car, and all stores you can walk to.

None. You'll need a car in any Texas city. It's easier not to use it in Austin and Dallas, but you'll still need one.

Actually, there are neighborhoods where you won't literally need your own set of wheels, but you would be limiting yourself withoutit.

You'll need a car in every Texas city if you want access to the entire city.

I would say Austin probably has the best public transit in Texas. There are a few neighborhoods like downtown, East Austin directly east of I-35, and West Campus where you can function in regular day to day life without a car, if you work in the same area, but it would still be difficult to see the whole city of Austin.

Austin's isn't as good as Dallas's from what I hear from my neighbors here who have used both. I recently heard that Houston is adding more routes to their line and adding lines.

although we will have a vehicle, can you tell me the best neighbourhoods around Houston that have the best bus routes to downtown?

If you're not just talking about rail then Houston's public transportation options (routes, number of buses, HOV, park and ride, etc.) are better.

Speaking of transit, San Antonio just finally approved the first rail route to be built. It's about FREAKIN' time. Of course it won't be much, but it gets the ball rolling.
