Well, that is about to change. HEB is definitely coming to El Paso. They just finished their first store in Lubbock last year and before that, ones in San Angelo and Abilene.

A family friend worked for the one in Lubbock and told us that HEB was planning 4 stores total in Lubbock, several in Amarillo and they bought land in El Paso.

HEB has been in San Angelo since 1992. I remember the grand opening of the big store there when I was a student at Angelo State.

HEB is also HUGE in northern Mexico where they have over 60 stores and are opening more all the time. Their Mexican stores are often bigger and fancier than the American variety.

In Austin, most major chain grocery stores have not been able to compete with HEB. Safeway, Apple Tree, Albertson's, Tom Thumb, Randall's, coudn't compete with HEB. I don't know if there are any Randall's left in Austin or not. Seems I heard a few months ago they are leaving Austin. The one on Wm Cannon at MoPac closed recently. Not sure about the one on Ben White.

The only other chain grocery stores that seem to do pretty good in Austin are the specialty grocery stores such as Whole Foods, Sprouts, Trader Joes, Central Market, and Fiesta.

I haven't seen the stats, but I would think Walmart would be a big grocery player in Austin.

That said, it is notable that HEB was able to stop a Walmart grocery takeover in San Antonio - they basically came to a standoff.

The problem if you want to call it that is Walmarts grocery is just sucks compared to HEB in central Texas. When it comes too fruits and veggies there is no comparison. Not even close.

There’s a few Randall’s in Austin. Especially in the NW and W Austin area.

Central Market is owned by HEB.

Well, Walmart's quality deficiencies didn't keep it from becoming the #1 grocer in many markets, including DFW (where perhaps not coincidentally HEB was almost nonexistent until now). But where HEB is strong, like San Antonio and Houston, it's been able to effectively compete.
