I remember when the country singer Dwight Yoakam was discussing in an interview being asked to act in "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada."

"Tommy Lee Jones called me and said he wanted me in the movie and I asked where was it being filmed at. Tommy Lee said ' We start at Van Horn and it gets worse.'"

I always liked that line.

Yoakum probably would have freaked if he had been in the scenes filmed at Monahans Sandhills....LOL!!!

Who would want to live in Van Horn??? Your career choices are McDonalds, motel, gas station or Border Patrol checkpoint.

I'm surprised it has a Border Patrol checkpoint, since it's quite a long way from the border.

If it had a Whataburger rather than a McDonald's, I might consider it.

Don't know about a checkpoint there. Closest one I know of is at Sierra Blanca. But Van Horn is the gathering place for all sorts of law enforcement besides the Border Patrol. There are so many lawmen in the motels there every night, that the agencies must spread their business around to be fair to everyone. And no need to lock your motel room door at night! Not with most of the parking lots taken up with law enforcement vehicles!

Well, there's something to be said for that! I always worry about some dirtbags hauling off my motorcycle when I go on a trip. Hearing noise out in the parking lot from inside a motel room late at night and wondering about it isn't much fun.

Does the little fuel stop on the interstate still have a sign which says, "Diesel Fried Chicken?" (I guess they never learned about spacing words. )
