outside of the mazdaspeed version, the Miata has never approached 200hp, yet it's been revered for years as one of the best driving experiences out there.

So? The Miata is a two seater. It also has a large aftermarket following for turbos, V6 and V8 swaps. The Eclipse was a 2+2. What difference does it make whether it had a turbo or not? Turbos are cheap. For a sports car today to make 200hp that is no quicker than what you could purchase 20 years ago for less money is pathetic.

Well. The FR-S is significantly faster than that 1990 Eclipse, both the GS-T and the GSX. And $16k in 1990 money is equivalent to $29k now thanks to inflation.

And to the brand's credit, Scion was never named even once in any of the various Toyota recalls of the past decade.

No, it isn't.

The Eclipse, Talon, and Laser turbos were pulling 6.5 sec 0-60 times 25 years ago. Quarters were about 15-15.2. It also didn't matter whether you used the manual or automatic.

The FRS in manual version barely beats those cars, the best times I've seen are 6.2.

Considering how laughably easy it is to mod a turbo car from that era, the DSM cars win hands down.

I just pulled up 6.8/15.2 and 7.3/15.7 here for the Eclipse:
Mitsubishi 0-60 Times & Mitsubishi Quarter Mile Times | Mitsubishi Eclipse, EVO Lancer, 3000GT, Galant, Outlander & more 0 to 60 stats!

vs 6.2/14.8 on the FR-S
2013 Scion FR-S First Test - Motor Trend

In any case it's certainly not the same speed or slower nor more expensive as you were asserting.

Agreed they were easier to mod, though crank walk was always lurking.

When I think Toyota, I think blender, or toaster. I don't even realistically consider Toyota when deciding on cars because they remind me of an appliance brand.

If they could bring over some Lexus styling, maybe throw in some HP and a few RWD platforms, they might capture more market.
Aren't they coming out with a new Supra finally?

What's impractical about the xB? It has a fairly roomy, thoughtfully designed, reasonably nice interior that can be used to haul fairly large amounts of cargo/people without much hassle.

It certainly looks a lot better on the inside that the cheap plastic garbage interiors on low end Toyota-badged Toyotas that cost more money.

It's not so much that it's impractical, as that it's viewed as a product for kids. However, current teenagers don't want the same car that their parents or aunt/uncle had. That leaves no market for it aside from the occasional senior citizen who wants something roomy and comfortable to run around in and doesn't care about marketing.

I really think the improved quality of current Korean offerings is what hurt Scion the most and the fact that the vehicles were seldom updated. None seemed the least bit special aside from the original Xb, even when released.

The Soul is absolutely charming in comparison to Scion offerings and this is coming from a die-hard Toyota fan.
