As someone on here put it so well....Toyota buyers lost faith in the domestics many years ago. If/when they lose faith in Toyota...the beneficiaries will be Honda, Hyundai, etc.
They had a recall for a limited problem with a vary small percent of there vehicles, then the media and the feds pounced, Toyota set back studied the problem, fixed it, then started aggresively challanging the hoaxes with the fed right there to study the evidence, gee haven't heard much the last few weeks, whats up?
Forget the hype, if you have a toyota you know what you have. 80% of toyotas built 20 years ago are still on the road, damn right they have a long way to fall to get down to most automakers. Wonder what percent of honda's and hyunda's are on the road from 20 years ago, Toyota will survive a be a better company for there problems.
I don't think the issue was the problem/recall itself. I think the problem was the fact that Toyota supposedly new about the problem and did nothing to rectify it.
I think you are correct that the bigger issue is how Toyota handled the problems, not that there were any. The Media in the past was likely to gloss over any problems with Japanese auto makers and pounce on American manufacturers, but now that seems to have changed. Toyota has a reputation for ignoring customer complaints, and that is being brought to light now that people are paying attention.
This Toyota storys has grown legs and just started running. Although when you say that Toyota has no alternative, I have to disagree. It is commonly said that consumer perception is 4 years behind the product, and I think that is the case for Kia. I recently bought a Kia Sportage, and I absolutely love it. I bought it from the Kia Store, a Louisville Used Cars dealer. It has a great warranty and a much cheaper price tag than a Toyota. I would recommend you take a look at a Kia before you buy a Toyota... Here is the Kia Stores website www.kiastore.com

Sorry domestic fans, that's just the way it is...
The way what is? Your opinion that has no basis in fact? Are you oblivious to the rising sales of Ford and GM?
