Its not nice, but I think we are all entitled to feel anxious when we see a Muslim on our plane.
No, we're not. You should seek serious help. It's paranoia like that that does manifest itself into more serious mental problems, which can include you being the one to commit a crime. And most of the time, the person you think is a Muslim's probably a Sikh.
On the terrorist note, your father is just saying out loud what I know most people are already thinking. I know it is stereotyping. Its not nice, but I think we are all entitled to feel anxious when we see a Muslim on our plane. Anyone who remembers 9/11 is going to think about that. I know every time I get on a plane I think of 9/11. Oh well if they don't like it.
There have probably been tons of Muslims on a plane with you before and you never noticed because they didn't have long beards and wear a turban (which by the way would make them Sikhs).
I was on a flight the other day and as a seasoned traveler feel that there are some small etiquette items that I've always adhered too while flying. One obvious one which I believe may be illegal is you don't say the word "bomb" on a plane even if joking.....it just seems wrong and puts people on edge not to mention how they would look at you.
Anyways, back to this flight I was on......there were two gentlemen behind me who were clearly new-ish to flying and they kept discussing rather loudly about how this plane was doomed to crash cause they just "felt it". Mind you their were families with small children seated near us and the flight was perfectly normal and fine but at one point I almost turned around and said to them that it's really in poor taste to discuss that sort of thing so openly and out loud when everyone around you can hear it. Their discussion literally went on for about 45 mins too. I feel it just puts out negative energy on the flight and given that there are 150+ other people here other than these two morons, let's keep that sort of thing to yourself. Am I wrong in thinking this or how do you feel about it? Would you have said something?
When the flight finally landed, they actually then said "wow, we actually did make it and here I was actually hoping it did crash so we didn't have to work for this company anymore". Really?? lol, again if it was just you two then say what you want, but hoping for something like that when there are many other lives on board is just straight up gauche. Perhaps I'm alone in this thinking but was curious what others think about this?
Frankly, I'm kind of tired of this uptight atmosphere in such places, with people using 9/11 (which has now been going on 13 years ago that it happened) as a justification for so much security and everyone being so on-edge about everything. You see it in other places too, having to be practically strip-searched in some places just to pick up your kids from school. I am SO glad our local school isn't like that.
I actually agree with the Ben Stiller character (Greg Focker) in "Meet the Parents" when he told the stewardess "it's not like I have a bomb" and when told later he was wrong he dead-seriously said "what's wrong with saying bomb on an airplane" and even sarcastically saying back to the guy "bomb-a-bomb-bomb" etc. I absolutely love that, even though I will agree that a lot of audible bomb conversations still aren't the most wonderful thing to do either.
Really, enough of this post 9/11 hysteria. As awful as that day was, and as much as NO ONE wants something like that ever happening again, it was one incident out of millions of flights that have occurred where nothing has gone wrong. Have some perspective, be consistent--remember all of the times when there were shooting in post offices, I don't imagine if I had gone to the local post office going "I hope no one goes postal while I'm in here" that anyone would've acted all aghast.
Geez. Lighten up. Stop using 9/11 as an excuse for too much security, too much of this chilly atmosphere. We're flying and as such many of us are going on vacation, it's not like we're not entering the FBI or Department of Defense buildings. Stop being so uptight.

It's distasteful and like you said can be disruptive. It's akin to being in a 7-11 and talking about robbing the place or being in a movie theater and talking about a fire or something (just trying to think of examples off the top of my head.)
After 10 minutes hearing that conversation, I would have said something to them.

Don't use 9/11 as an excuse for discrimination.
Thank you. I have several Muslim friends, and they were just as horrified by 9/11 as I was - and it's impacted their lives negatively ever since in ways that are much worse than me having to take off my shoes and unpack my Zip-loc bag of toiletries at the airport security checkpoints.
No Muslims were behind the Oklahoma Federal office building bombing or the theater and school shootings. Should we be nervous about all young white men because a few are sick? Of course not.
I would definitely turn around and give them an angry look. If they didn't stop I would remark about it being disrespectful with kids/white knucklers around.
It's sad to see how much disrespect Americans accept nowadays.

I think if you said "I'm the bomb" or something like that about yourself then your fine, or should be. If I got escorted off a flight for saying that, I'd call a lawyer ASAP. Now obviously "I have a bomb and I'm not afraid to use it" or "I have materials to create a bomb, don't make me get up and go into the bathroom to create it" are entirely different scenerario's and are admissible for an emergency landing and straight into the arms of an air marshall/FBI agent, rightfully so too.
