I've spent $300-$400 a night on hotel rooms around the world on several locations, but 2 stand out to me because of size. One hotel was in Salzburg, and the other was in Toronto. Both were botique, arty hotels where each room was unique and decorated by a specific artist. I remember feeling like both of those were "the most" I ever spent because they were so small - and even by those cities standards! The hotel room in Toronto was so tight that I couldn't even keep my luggage in it. I unpacked into the one drawer (I couldn't walk in between the bed and the shelving unit/dresser thing without turning myself sideways - and I'm small!), then I had to put my bag into the trunk of the rental car! If that room was even 100 sq/ft, I'd be shocked. So by price per square inch, that was by far the most expensive.
I once paid about $250 for a last-minute hotel room in Manhattan when my flight out of NYC was cancelled. I was traveling on business so it was supposed to be reimbursed, but I was a new employee and I messed up the paperwork and had to eat the cost myself. For non-work travel, the most I ever paid was around $100 a night when some friends and I went to Chicago. I'm not sure where the friend who booked it found that deal, but the hotel was right in the heart of things and included breakfast for the 3 of us.
Now, the most expensive hotel I actually selected and booked for myself was $26 a night in a city in Honduras where I couldn't find someone to stay with. I prefer to stay with local hosts when I travel for my own pleasure and enrichment. I have stayed in some very nice/expensive places when on trips with my parents of for my company, but I wouldn't choose those places on my own.
Paid $200 a couple months ago for one night in Carmel. Not worth it because the room didn't have air conditioning and it was just a normal motel, nothing special. We did it because we didn't feel like driving to Monterrey or some other city.
$1000 a night for the Mandarin Oriental in NYC. Totally worth it for the view. Central Park from the 45th Floor watching the sun set over Central Park? Heaven.
I'm sure I've paid a lot for hotel rooms in warm weather during season.
There might have been a couple of times when I was desperate for a stop (to retain my sanity and my marriage) when I couldn't find anything for under the 50's for a US motel. Overseas, rarely (if ever) even half of that. I've had a few that cost more than that, but I didn't have to pay myself. If I'd ever paid much more than $50, I'd be ashamed to admit it. I've rented houses for that much a month.
I'm mentally adjusting for inflation, since my travels have been over many decades. My first family trip through Mexico, there was an 85-cent hotel in a little town in Oaxaca, that was listed in the AAA guide. Even now, I often pay less than $10 in Mexico. As recently as the 1990s, there were clean comfortable private rooms in villages on Guatemala's Lake Atitlan for $2. In London, I remember paying 15-shillings for B/B in Edgeware Road.
