A lot of people are overlooking Bermuda, too. Yes, I consider it to be part of the Caribbean, although it is technically a little too far north, it still has that British-Carribbean vibe, beautiful white sand beaches and turquoise-blue water. Plus, it is very, very safe.
Safest: #1 Bermuda, #2 St. Johns
Least Safe: #1 Jamaica, #2 Trinidad & Tobago
Don't Even Think About It! : #1 Haiti, #2 Cuba
That's sad to hear about Cuba. I know a lot more Americans will be traveling there now with renewed relations between the countries. Plus I have always wanted to go myself. What exactly are the things that make Cuba so bad for tourists right now?
My father goes about once a year for business reasons. I have been, although it's been over 30 years. I would actually like to back someday since most of my father's family is still there and I think that it is a shame that I don't have a connection with them.
I meant no harm. I hope you get to return to Haiti one day soon and reunite with your family.

I've never heard of people having any problems traveling to Cuba. I've had friends and family who have gone there in recent years and they have all enjoyed their trips there. It may be lacking in some amenities but I believe that it is much safer than other islands in the Caribbean
Bermuda is safe but not in the Caribbean! Barbados seems safe and moderately prosperous, with few very poor people. The drawback is it's far away and a little dull, but I was there in the summer and that's the off season.
I love St. Thomas and feel quite safe there. We even have a resident expert on this forum who we met in person on our last visit to STT. It's one of our favorite ports.
At the opposite end is Tortola which I found unclean and felt quite unsafe and won't go back.
I liked the French side of St. Maarten. Was not overly impressed with the Dutch side.
We go to the French side often. Once was enough on the Dutch side. I read the local newspaper every day when we're on the island, and the crime reports are largely for the Dutch side.
Antigua used to be very safe, less so these days, unfortunately, but the resorts are fine. On St Lucia the locals seemed so unfriendly that we were deterred from exploring too far. Bermuda, very safe, to the point of almost boring.
