How about this.... driving the Dalton highway all the way to the Arctic Ocean. I saw a pic of the remoteness of this highway and I don't think I am going to attempt this anytime soon since I value my life!
LOL, the indonesian sea bit was a 30 or 40 mile stretch between Bali and the Gili islands off of Lomback. "Lonely Planet Bali" mentioned it was possible by the local fishing boats, with subtle warnings of the dangers. I was in a remote part of the otherwise developed Bali and didn't want to spend a day getting to where the ferry boats leave from in Bali, so I asked the lodge I was staying to find me a guy with a boat.

It makes a good story but in retrospect traveling 40 miles on open water (took about 5 hours, we had to leave when still dark), on a 2 foot wide leaking kayak with a small engine, no radio, no safety equipment, ocean water and waves spraying on me the whole time, with a guy that understood two words of english maybe, probably was not a good idea. And if Lonely Planet, a manual that prides itself on solo travel, warns it's dangerous, you probably shouldn't do it.

But I arrived, walked off the boat onto the beach, to my next lodge. The Island of Gili, with no motorized vehicles, is another story.
