Well, I did it yesterday while spending more time buying more things on sale online. I bought a ticket to Europe for the third week in March, I'm betting I'll be vaccinated (and alive) by then. It gives me a very concrete deadline to look forward to after this dismal year & get things accomplished before I go, I'm planning on staying for an extended period so I want to have a good outline for an itinerary.
Plus the airlines have dropped their change fees in case something happens & I have to delay my trip, I suspect the summer tourist season will be ridiculously crowded in all the known destinations so I'd rather get the jump on that.
Traveled to Miami for Turkey day. Denver airport was semi busy. Miami airport was pretty dam busy coming back this Wednesday. I'm so glad I have the TSA precheck because the regular security line was 2 blocks long!!!
We had to cancel a vacation to Japan that had been scheduled for August of this year. With vaccines on the way, I'm very much thinking/hoping that we can visit in late August 2021 (after the Olympics). Not going to purchase airfare for at least a couple more months, however.
In SC I stayed in the hotel room the whole time (~5 days) expect for a few trips to grocery stores and the park for fresh air.
In MIA I actually ate out a few times. In one restaurant there was only 1 other table inside that was occupied with a couple. I spent quite a bit of time walking/biking on the strip of the South Beach area and relaxing on the beach. Of course, social distancing on the beach is easy. The strip area had a ton of people out on Saturday (as usual) so I regretted being out on that day because of the amount of people I observed not wearing masks. Overall, I'm still considering returning the end of this month actually; getting out into the warmth and sunlight did me a whole lotta good. Still trying to weigh the risks as I avoided the news the past 2 weeks and from what I'm seeing things have just gotten so bad COVID-wise.
I must say that overall my flight experience was smooth/good and turned out to be the least of my concerns. I hadn't flown since COVID and found the airports/flights not to be too crowded.

A couple of days after booking this I found out that the twin innoculations are given a month apart so I cancelled & am now considering late May/early June. The airlines have dropped their cancellation & change fees.

Be sure to read the fine print. American, for example, only allows you to change one time.

Glad SWA keeps allowing me rolling changes... 39 trips booked at the moment (through Aug 10th)
over 50 unused credits of various amounts (Expiring Sept 2022, due to Covid)
and a zillion 'points'.
Free (credits for 1 yr from DoP) changes and cancellations up until 10 min before flight.
I like free bags.. as I haul tools (and salmon) between my homes.
