We are looking to drive for a short vacation that is with-in 10 hours or so. Some things we are looking for would be similar to Gatlinburg TN or Myrtle Beach, SC. We are looking for someplace different that we've never been. Lots of entertainment and kind of a happening area. We have a 14 year old son. My son likes haunted places. My husband likes mountains and outdoor places like parks. I would like to see some snow or at least go snow tubing. We don't want to be in the middle of nowhere that would be boring. Any suggestions?

Beckycat, this is stretching it ohhhh just a wee bit, but why not Seattle? Has everything you say you want in spades! Including Forks, the town your son probably adores from the Twilight books; outdoors forever; snow forever both in the many Cascade Mountain ski areas as well as, right now, in the lowlands; and never a boring moment if that's how you like it including spectacular food at restaurants which have a better reputation than those in New York City! All of that is smack in the middle of the fabled Pacific Northwest... land of forests, drizzle and mystery... You could fall in love. I kid you not.

Go north and west for colder weather!

Charlottesville, VA or Roanoke. Even the W. Virginia mountains. Lots of chilly, fishing and hunting.

See Rock City, Ruby Falls, and the incline Railway. You can cross the river on a boat or a walking bridge. It's beautiful!

The High Country of NC: Boone, Blowing Rock, Banner Elk, Linville, West Jefferson & everything in between. You'll be in the heart of the mountains with skiing and snowtubing available, as well as the best chance of snow that you'll find in the southern Appalachians. You won't find quite the degree of tourist infrastructure as in Gatlinburg, however there are a decent number of attractions and natural wonders. I believe the Green Park Inn in Blowing Rock is reportedly haunted, so I'm not sure if they offer any "ghost tours" that might appeal to your son.
