Has anyone lost a bag on an airline? By "lost" I mean totally lost, not delayed, meaning it was never found again. What kind of compensation did you receive?

You receive the amount you can itemize to a max of $3,300. Don't let that amount fool you, the exclusions are long and cover just about everything but clothing and normal toiletries. So if you checked your new laptop in the lost luggage, it's not covered. that antique gold medallion, Excluded, you get nothing. The terms and conditions on your ticket will spell out your rights and the airlines rights.

Yes, with Air Canada, way way back. They had me prepare a list of what I had in the suitcase as well as a list of what I paid for each item and when it was purchased. From there they calculated a depreciation value and cut me a cheque. It was pretty painless, but you don't get replacement value of goods from an airline (at least not from AirCanada) - you would need insurance for that (and rightly so).

Your stuff may have been sold at the store called Unclaimed Baggage in Scottsboro, AL.

For years they have been buying all the unclaimed baggage they can from airlines and have quite a unique place. If can, go.

...and no, I have no connection to the store.

Default Slightly off-thread

I had a box of T-shirts and other souvenirs STOLEN (I'm sure) while flying BA out of Brussels airport. BA paid fair market value but I can't recall the procedure. There wasn't that much paperwork. I found out later the Brussels airport is notorious for thieves. Another piece turned up missing and I had to threaten to cancel my flight and wait right there all day long till I got my bag back. Funny thing, they found it.
