Chicago will probably be at 53 by Monday morning. Nice weather this weekend by Chicago standards will increase those numbers

Wait, that's 53 in just one month? That's insane. Means Chicago's on pace for 636 murders this year! Is there something going on over there crazier than usual (gang war, cartel intrusion, racial tensions, etc.)?

It's just "more of the same". The main theory is what we saw in Baltimore and St Louis after the police shootings and response. The police are being more "shy" and not stopping people and being more cautious, as a result they aren't putting the pressure on the citizens before they commit crimes and what you see is hundreds of shootings and dozens of murders. It's almost all in the same violent areas, teenagers and guys in their early 20's running around shooting at one another for no apparent reason.

The police literally have a list of about 1,000 people that they assume will be shot or killed at any time given their history and gang affiliations. Normally when someone is shot they can find them on the list, then see who they were associated with, who they were "enemies" with and they can track down who will likely get shot next and try to diffuse the situation. Almost 80% of victims in Chicago had a police record. Unfortunately no one in those areas, even those who are shot, will cooperate with police and tell them who did the shooting. Even if they know the names immediately they refuse to speak with the police at the hospital in any way.

Now though the police are demoralized and they're being much more cautious because of the backlash from police shooting incidents. The number of people being stopped in the city and questioned is down something like 33% so far this year.

It's not a cartel issue. It's not even really a drug issue much anymore. Most of these teenagers are just in "gangs" that mean nothing other than a group of kids that got together. They run around and shoot at other kids in their neighborhoods who are in "gangs" of their own. There's no point to any of it anymore. The organized gangs were broken up to a large degree, the real heavy hitters that controlled drug trade. This is just kids shooting other neighbor kids because according to them "If I don't shoot this guy first, then I'll be the one getting killed". It's a community of extreme paranoia.

It's not an issue between races. Almost universally the people who got killed were young black men at the hands of young black men. It's very segregated on the south and west sides. Equal number of blacks and whites in the city. You can count on your finger some years how many white people are killed, while there are many hundreds of black people killed each year. It's a very stark divide between the communities.

You can wander around the downtown area or the north side for years and have no idea that this is going on 7-8 miles away.

I heard the police are more "relaxed" there now after the release of those police shooting videos

Something else interesting is that a full 20% of shooting victims this year have been inside a vehicle. That seems very high. They're virtually all from altercations that happened and led to a shooting or someone targeted by someone in another car or on the streets. (They weren't just random "lets go shoot this car".)

The issue these days is most of these "gangs" are nothing more than neighborhood cliques. From a few dozens legit and organized gangs from the 90's into the 2000's, they've been taken down from the top, but instead of that stopping the violence, they instead fractioned off into HUNDREDS of little gangs with no organization or goals...other than staying alive and attacking other gangs to do so.

Unemployed kids with parents who don't care or are too afraid get pressured into a gang. Bang bang.

Where the hell are the parents??? It seems most of the people getting shot in the city this year have been teenagers.
