overrated, but it is good. If you want to try something a little closer to where you are staying there is a la pierra suiza and el guero canelo. If you do go to the south side go during the day, but there are a lot of good restaurants around the south side. Tucson is known for dining, so expect yourself to dine out every night, prices are reasonable as well. Places like guero canelo you can get a very big burro for about 6 or 7 dollars. It can feed at least 2 people.

Having read some (not all) of the posts concerning crime in certain parts of the city, I'm beginning to wonder if this is a good idea.

Will the weather be suitable? Heat is not a problem, but what about rain? I don't expect sunshine all day every day (I'm British!), but don't want to be flooded out.

I enjoyed my trip to Flagstaff, Grand Canyon, and Monument valley last year, and really would like to see the Southern part of the state too.

Any advice, please?

Although not centrally located, your Red Roof Inn will be relatively safe as well as close to the freeway and many fun places to shop and eat.

As for the weather . . . the "monsoons" usually end around Labor Day so by the 12th the rain should be all gone with lots of sun and low humidity.

Come on down and enjoy . . .

El Guero Canelo is just a good taco place. Las Cazuelitas is another one South Tucson's great Mexican restaurant. La Parrilla Suiza is a restaurant whose dishes are more Mexico City style plates where as these in South Tucson have Northwestern Mexican flair. So to each their own.

Okay, back to the topic, I'm not a Tucson resident, I live in Phoenix but I've been to Tucson a number of times, last time being 2004, and it's a good place to visit because it's not too crowded, even during the cool season from early October through the middle of May. Wherever you decide to stay, you won't be too far from all of the attractions in Tucson since it's much smaller than it's bigger sister city to the northwest, Phoenix.
