I found this from the Chicago Tribune~~heartbreaking. He was a really soft spoken, sweet tempered man from what we could see. He was eliminated, then came back, and was runner up to Christine Ha on Season 3. Very tragic.
Very sad news about Josh. I would have never expected something like this to happen to someone who seemed so great, humble, and talented. I'm actually shocked!
On another note, this is not the first time a contestant from one of Chef Gordon Ramsay's show was committed suicide, I think one or two of Hell's Kitchen's contestants have also committed suicide. Makes me wonder what these shows do to people, it changes them. I wish I could remember the names, but can't now.
Anyhow, my condolences and prayers go out to Josh's family.
I don't think it's the shows that are the problem, but it's more the nature of people who apply to be on the shows. It takes a certain type to, first, apply ... and second, to be cast. People who are happy and satisfied with their lives, probably aren't going to apply. It's the people who are searching for something ... fame, a quick fix to something, something like that.

Well, years back I heard there were a lot of alcoholics in chef world. Probably drugs in these days. I think to be a chef some take only a six month course and some just learn on the job. Because it offers some possibility of a large salary for not a lot of money spent on training, people who are not from wealthy families tend to get involved. I think Ramsay came from a very tough London neighborhood, himself.
There's probably a lot of depression there. It's a pity. Josh was such a nice guy. I'm sure we were all hoping that he landed on his feet.

I was reading in some article that Josh suffered from bipolar, shizophrenia, and possibly some depression. I would imagine when anyone with these types of diagnoses might be better off to cook, landscape, or do something they enjoy or that is supposed to relax them as a career. These types of careers minimize interaction with the public population, therefore no triggers will activate symptoms resulting in "blow ups", suicide, and other unpredictable (yet sad) endings.
You are right goldengrain, I think Ramsay came very rough background, and I used to hypothesize that he had alcoholic temptations at times. Many of the Hell's Kitchen cast are always smoking on the show, it seems they always have wrecked nerves or need some instant nicotine relief.
I was shocked too. But I'm sure we don't get to know a lot of the reality that goes on in their lives. Saddened by the news. He was my favorite of that season.
