Oprah is not any different in that than any other TV program -- the tradition has nothing to do with her. I've been in "live" audiences a couple of times (in NY and LA) and they all have demands (it's too nice to call them merely "instructions") for their audiences. Most recently, on a trip to LA, I sat in for a Craig Ferguson taping since I really enjoy his program. From now on, I'll just watch at home. His warm up comedian wasn't funny, the demands were endless (I lost count of how many times we had to "rehearse" our laughter), and from where I was sitting in the very small audience, I could barely see Craig. The show on TV is much more fun. The rules are long standing in the business, don't blame Oprah.

I can blame her when I hear that she belittled and fussed at an elderly man who did not stand up when her royal highness entered.
