I was wondering about that hatch as well. I guess because it offered an option for expanding. What I don't understand is why the greenhouse isn't on the surface. There is sunlight with no electric lighting needed!
Well during a two month long dust storm, being on the surface isn't much better. Plus being in that cave gives them water and protection from those giant tornadoes on Mars.

I get that about the dust storm, but the reason for the expedited power schedule was due to the green house needing more lighting. That resulted in injury and the system not being fully online when the storm struck. I wouldn't put the entire settlement on the surface but a small greenhouse would have been beneficial. If we are ever going to colonize Mars we will have to learn to live on the surface.
To me the show has been a disappointment. It was supposed to launch the dream of going to Mars for a new generation, right? Instead it's been an endless parade of depressed people (2037, the "Drama" part). Even the Mars Leader (name?) has depressing eye makeup. The show may end on some kind of upbeat note on Monday, but I think it missed its chance to be an exhilarating call for a new age of planetary exploration and colonization. I'm sure NatGeo didn't want an unrealistically happy sci-fi series, but this Mars fantasy is a nightmare. And the 2016 sections aren't all that informative if you already know a little about Mars. If the series had been longer, I'd give up on it now. (And I'm a "rah-rah on to Mars!" person, always have been.) I'll watch the last episode, just to see if there is some kind of "It was all worth it" ending.
Yea, a bit negative overall. I would not of brought in the mentally ill botanist talking to plants. Too creepy. Also too many problems. Give me a little more Pollyanna success please. They passed up 4 years of successful progress we could have gotten a taste of in exchange for this pile of muck. Hell, even a nice rover cruise showing a minor geological discovery would have been more entertaining.

Amazing ending to the mini-series. It *would* be nice if it continued.
I have a lot of anger every time I think of how space exploration has been squandered since the Apollo 11 moon launch. Humanity went from riding on horses to Putting a man on the moon in less than 100 years and then we stopped and haven't done much in the last 45+ years.

SMH.
Yes. Really too bad. I appreciate Robert Zubrin. That man really has a passion for the expansion of space exploration.
The series looked to be very good but I thought is was boring. Maybe I expected too much, but there really weren't many times when it got very interesting, and I like these kinds of programs.
