Elaine always was a complete *****. So was Jerry. So was George. So was Kramer. That was the humor of the show. These were all really horrible, selfish people whose horrible selfishness kept sabotaging their lives.
It points to the absurdness of human nature. People often jump through hoops just to be a follower and a member of the newest club. Remember how parents would give up everything to get a Cabbage Patch Doll for Christmas, Tickle me Elmo? That soup stand was a real place with rude characters. There are long lines outside of Dominque Ansel just to buy the "cronut" from rude servers. Same idea. We're making fun of ourselves and that's not such a bad thing.
It is all how George, and Elaine react to the Soup Nazi, especially George. To this day when I place an order in a line like that, I say it like George responded, then shuffle side to side like he did just to amuse myself.
It's funnier partly if you've lived in New York for any amount of time and are familiar with the quirky independent restaurateurs there.
There are a million food stands in NYC, and this guy served as an exaggerated representation of that type, plus it poked fun at people's willingness to subject themselves to ridiculous standards just for a bowl of soup.
The armoire thing to me was also a classic NY story because it is always a pain to try and get furniture moved into an apartment building, and the tie-in with Kramer and the bullying gay guys was just perfect.
No--there was an actual soup place on West 55th. It was just a little place--the soup was incredible--everyone used to get his soup for lunch. It really did become a thing.
huh? a quick wiki check shows 180 eps produced. I don't get the joke.
As I said a few posts later, for a show that ran a whopping 180 eps, I find it mystifying that the fans never talk about anything but, and never shut up about, around five episodes. Just maybe teen/20 sensibilities extended too much credit to a 5/180ths laugh ratio.
Soup Nazi, Puffy Shirt, and I'm being generous about the other three.
