Yeah, but the voiceover is just for the viewers, that tone was just because us viewers knew the truth. None of the characters knew at that point.

Maybe I'm wrong, I haven't read the books, I think her identity was supposed to be a shock, but I don't think it's supposed to completely change Penelope's character. At least, I hope not. I liked Penelope and I don't want her to actually be secretively evil.

Except that wouldn't have gone along at all with Julie Andrews' voice over.

Wow, the actress who plays the Queen is only 49 in real life. I don't mean to diss anyone's real-life looks, but I thought her eyes were so strange when she first appeared on screen. They are so small for her face, I thought for sure it must be from a bad eye job, but apparently not since she's only 49.

The other casting which is weird is the girl who plays Eloise, who supposedly would be 17 or 18 if she's just making her debut. She's 30 and I think looks older than Penelope (who is 33 in real life). The actress who plays Daphne is 25 and she's obviously supposed to be older than Eloise.

Lady Danbury is my favorite (I mean, other than the hottie Duke but not for his acting LOL). I bet she gets an Emmy.

It wouldn't have been unheard of. This show is done in the vein of Gossip Girl in which the narrarator was a woman and GG ended up being a man.

I figured out the identity a few episodes in. It was unfortunately obvious that the outsider ends up being the ultimate insider (same as GG again).

If I hadn't had a lot of vacation time to spare, I probably wouldn't have watched this, but it was good for entertainment value. I'll watch more if they continue it.

Maybe I'm overanalyzing this, but I think part of the brilliance of having Julie Andrews doing this voice overs is just how opposite she is to the character who is ultimately revealed to be Lady Whistledown. When I think of Julie Andrews as a person and actress, I think of a beautiful, charming, regal woman who would stand out at any event she attended and hardly be the wallflower.

She was my favorite as well, and I don't think we're alone in that opinion. If anything, the Duke and Daphne were the weakest actors in the entire production. I think the best performances, aside from Lady Danbury were Eloise, Penelope, and Mrs. Featherington. It's easy to dismiss Mrs. F as an antagonist, but she really grew on me. She's a realist who has to function as the glue keeping her family together after her husband is revealed to be weak and putting them in financial ruin. She knows the only thing she can do to secure her children and herself a good future is to have them marry well, and she's wise enough to see that the raw materials she has to work with ain't all that great...

Human nature can't manage to put aside their prejudices after 100s, 1000s or 10,000s of years so in my mind it was better to just portray the integrated society as 'it's always been this way' instead of 'it just happened'.

Below is a spoiler, not from this show but from an article that discussed the books so don't read it if you don't want to know something that wasn't in season 1 but it is what I read on Penelopes ability to afford publishing the scandal sheet.

Spoiler
How the scandal sheet was financed was addressed in the books. As a teen ager she wrote scathing commentary on the society but hid them away so no one could see them. One day she left them out and her family's lawyer read one and though it was so good that they could publish them and make a fortune. He finds the printer and finances the publication. Over many years Penelope does make a fortune, giving much of it away to her mom and charity but does have the equivalent of over a million when she retires from writing the scandal sheet.

To read about it you have to read until the end of this article.

It doesn't go along with the Julie Andrews voiceover unless Whistledown is played by Andrews. Even if you don't know the voiceover is Julie Andrews, you know the voice sounds like an old lady, not a young one.

The voiceover is just for the viewers, and just supposed to represent how people might imagine the author to sound like - it's not supposed to be literal. It's based on novels, and there's no voiceover in the novels, and they wouldn't want the voiceover to blatantly give away the identity - it's supposed to fool you, to make you think Whistledown is an old widow, when it could really be anyone.

In the end, I do think it makes more sense to be a woman, not because of the voiceover, but because men had no need to speak the truth through anonymity. Men could generally say what they wanted, whenever they wanted, because they are men. As Virginia Woolf once said, "For most of history, anonymous was a woman."

I heard in the books Daphne is supposed to be 21 when debuted, which is ridiculous since girls were debuted as teenagers, not their early 20s. I guess the author didn't like the idea of sexualizing teenagers, which is understandable, but it means Eloise is probably supposed to be more like 20.

Still, I didn't realize the actor playing Eloise is 30 - I do think she looks younger. I was more distracted by the fact that her eyes are different sizes and it makes it looks like there's something wrong with the smaller one.

Keep in mind, I'm 38 and everyone seems to think I look like a college student in my early 20s. Some people are just look a lot younger or older than they are.

She's likeable, but I don't think she's that good. Maggie Smith played a similar role as the Dowager Countess of Grantham in Downton Abbey, and not only did a much better job, but the character was written better too.

Let's face it, Bridgerton is based on a trashy romance novel. It's entertaining, but I'd be very surprised if it won any Emmys for acting or writing (maybe for costumes).

I was so excited when I saw this series being compared to "Downton Abbey." Then I watched the first 30 minutes. Comparing this ridiculous exercise in dreck to "Downton Abbey" is like comparing a DingDong to a five-star bakery Pavlova.
