My memory of this is that game shows were not on prime time until much later. So I’m going to say you’re probably right Woolery was only doing the daytime version.
I just looked it up, and yes 1983 what is the debut of the nighttime wheel of fortune. And it was Pat and Vanna. He was also the host of the daytime version for a while, and then he left to do a talk show and the nighttime version and never went back to the daytime version which ended in 1989. Thank heavens for Wikipedia!
Well, I remember nighttime gameshows from before then.. "The Joker's Wild" and "Tic Tac Dough" being the ones that really stick in my memory. Looking it up.. Tic Tac Dough only started in '78, tho.
Anybody else notice that Vanna seems a bit unsteady on her legs lately when doing her five-step walk at the beginning of the show? It's slight, but it looks as if she is having a little trouble walking.
Does anyone remember back in the day when they didn't give away the big prizes, and instead the winner's head would be shown floating around on the screen while they had to use their prize money to select godawful things like a 6 foot tall ceramic giraffe?
You mean the $200 ceramic dalmatian and the remainder on a service merchandise gift certificate.

Hollywood Squares is the show that started the syndicated nighttime game show circuit before "primetime."
In the 1950s & early 60s, lots of game shows were on at night, I've Got a Secret, To Tell the Truth, the 64,000 dollar question and many others that are long forgotten. These were "primetime" shows. "
What qualities make “Wheel of Fortune” a long runner?
It is completely mindless. It is familiar. It is basic. Your average senior citizen can just veg out in front the TV night after night wihout expending a single calorie of energy.
Never in my life did I think the TV game of "Hangman" would last 40 years.
It is just HANGMAN people. How many people play Hangman anymore? Anybody? Bueller?

But that is why it is so successful—you can watch the same week’s shows out of order and probably still not get every session correct—
It would still be great if they would just digitize the players and not even use real people
Heck, digitize Pat and Vanna==there cannot be anything new under the sun they have to say
Basing that on viewership numbers and.. Wheel is 100% a play-along at home type show.
Simplicity, sometimes, is the key. And, that's why I think Wheel keeps high viewership. Anyone can play along.. From a 96 year old grandma to a 6 year old kid.
Jeopardy.. Again, a great companion piece to Wheel, but very different. The 96 year old and 6 year old, in general, won't have as much success playing along with that.. But, at least in the case of the 96 year old, they're not apt to change the channel, either.
