I would not call it intellectual, but the back stories, conspiracy-type backgrounds and how they are connected would apply to Heroes. I agree that Mad Men has a more intellectual quality to it and is subtle with a lot of innuendo. Most other shows are the entertainment factor. We did watch the new show Fringe, on fox. It looks somewhat promising.
Good luck finding anything on network TV that is intellectual in nature. None of the shows are. Its entertainment, not education.
Youre best chance of finding intellectual programming will be on these channels:
The History Channel
Discovery Channel
Smithsonian Channel
If you are a true intellectual you will not find any stimulation on ANY of the network shows. The writers arent really intellectuals themselves and the network "suits" prefer that things are "dumbed down" to gain more viewers.
DaBeez makes good points: there's almost nothing on network TV that encourages the mind, because the shows exist to sell products and to encourage consumption, not creation. I wish I got the Smithsonian Channel; I get only their journal.
The Dick Cavett Show was one of the last network shows that encouraged thought...
Numb3rs is, I think, that rare bird nowadays in which elegant, esoteric, highly specialized ways of thinking are required to carry out the plot and sometimes the subplots, are presented calmly as facts of life and not bizarre, and are explained enough for the audience to learn something about complex math and other pursuits.
I wholeheartedly recommend you check out The Wire. Although recently ended you can rent the first season on DVD (or purchase used from eBay) and see if it tickles your intellectual funny bone. High-quality acting, writing, and storytelling; invariably true-to-life depictions of crime, law enforcement, and politics. It's one of those shows that doesn't lead you by the hand and it's all the better because of it.
If rampant profanity turns you off, give it a chance anyway. After a few episodes it all starts to blend in seamlessly with the dialogue.
I caught Mad Men last night, sheer accident, and I loved it! Personally I watch a lot of Discovery Health and spend the rest of the day channel surfing. Thank God for good friends! Good luck and share if you find something.
