to add on, why do people think Conan was going to keep all of Leno's audience? he was a brand new host, AFAIK, never even guest hosted the show. under him, TTS is basically a new show that there are a LOT of shows that start out slow before finding their audience and picking up speed. heck, this was the case w/ Conan w/ the Late Night Show as well, IIRC. NBC didn't give him the chance to find his audience. yes, many would argue NBC didn't give Leno a chance to build his audience, but in this case, the affiliates are, understandably, getting rowdy and anxious and may not be willing to wait out better ratings.
VERY intersting. Seems Conan and his agent left out some "minor" details when they were doing his contract. Conan could get screwed out of the money he bargained for. He was NEVER guaranteed a certain time spot by NBC. If he walks then they don't have to pay him one penny.
"We're now told Conan's contract never specified a guaranteed time period. If NBC wanted to run the show at 3:00 AM, Conan would have no recourse. We're told Conan's reps never even asked for a guaranteed time period when they negotiated his contract -- shocking, but true.
By contrast, we're told Jay Leno's deal specifically guarantees his 10:00 PM time period, so the network must negotiate a new deal with him before he moves back to 11:35 PM."
CONAN!!!! For supposedly being a Harvard "genius" you REALLY screwed this one up. Maybe next time it would pay off for you if you used some common sense.

so then how do you explain conan losing 50% of Leno's ratings????????
and being no better with the coveted "younger demographic" than Letterman, this was suppossed to be his strong point over Leno.
I think I already did explain a lot of this.
He suffers from the same lack of lead in the networks grabbed their pitchforks about.
He also had a very similar show on the same network, getting more push and better guests during a primetime slot.
He also wasn't given a lot of time to develop his audience.
Now would it of happened or would he of been a guaranteed success if everything was kept in a vacuum?
Who knows.
Personally I think even with a traditional lead in he would of lost some viewers out of the gate, but would of had a chance to build up some others.
He would probably rate lower leno did (who pulled great ratings) but would probably still win the same time slot.
They set both up by failure. Only so many guest stars to go around and other networks really didn't want to send their actors to a competitors primetime show.
There was little chance either should would succeed.
NBC was fine not getting ratings with leno because it cost them nothing.
What did they expect to happen to conan though when they didn't draw ratings in primetime, the news lost viewers and they were running a talk show 5x a week?

My prediction: Conan stays, Leno quits and goes to Fox
