The vast majority of Americans are still employed. While this map certainly shows that the recession has had a nationwide effect on employment excepting the Northern and Central Plains, at least 85 percent of people are still employed in most counties.
Keep in mind also that unemployment includes people actively seeking employment. The unemployment rate can actually go up if people who were previously not looking for work start looking again. Therefore a rising unemployment rate isn't all bad.
