I'm trying to get a freelance business going. I'm holding myself out as an expert with years of experience. Really trying to rebrand myself, which includes not announcing that I'm on UI. My promotional materials would be horrendous if I did and no one would hire me.
I now have someone interested in me doing about 20 hours of work, with potential for much more. But if the contractor finds out on my UI, then I'll lose credibility and I doubt he'll hire me for more work.
Will he know I'm on UI once I report the work to NY DOL?
UI doesn't care who you worked for unless its a W2 job. 1099 work is not eligible for UI but you should report the earnings if you are claiming for benefits.
I don't know what NY UI does, but in AZ, once the earnings cease, the state will send a separation questionnaire to the employer to determine if you're still eligible for UI. So, yes, the employer might find out.
Also, there's that ever present risk of being labelled "self-employed" and getting completely kicked out of the system.
