New person here, but have some questions that hopefully people from California (or other locations) might have some insight for.

In June of 2008 (in fact, today is the one year anniversary), I was laid off from my job. I filed for unemployment and received benefits for about 2 months before I got a new job in August of 2008.

Unfortunately, my job only last seven months before I was laid off again in April of 2009. I filed for unemployment again immediately afterwards. In an interesting move, the EDD didn't open a new claim and instead re-opened my previous claim.

Thus, my one year "claim" has now expired officials as of today. However, I still have quite a bit of money that wasn't used due to me working for 7 months as well as me deducting from my unemployment with my independent contractor work (basketball referee).

So the question is.....do I file a "new claim" and would this be considered an extension? The EDD website is not very clear about this.

I would appreciate any thoughts on this.

You don't say if you are unable to certify and collect under the original claim, or are you anticipating this? If you get locked out, call them and tell them to re-activate your claim as you still have extensions after the original claim. I'm in NJ so I am kinda generalizing your unique problem. Most of us are re activating our 1 yr claim to continue on extensions, not sure about your case with the original claim expiring.

Hi Taurus430,

Yes, I have been collecting the past two months under the original claim filed back last year. However, the expiration date is June 20th, 2009 so I'm trying to figure out my next move.

Unless someone has your exact circumstances to comment to you, continue to claim until something happens like you get some error message. I claim on line so although I had money, it locked me out and forced me to call. I know you like to know ahead of time but with unemployment, hard to tell, maybe someone else has a better answer, good luck!!!!

I have the exact same problem. My claim expires 8/15/09. I still have $8,000 of funds available. It is so hard to connect with the EDD. I have emailed twice and gotten 2 different answers: 1 said I will get an extension, the other said I have to file a new claim. Problem is, if I file a new claim, my base period changes and my benefits will be only about 1/4 of what I am now getting. I hope the first answer I got is the right one and I get an extension. Times are really tough.

My claim expires 1/10/10, and I was told that EDD would automatically file for my extension, I wouldn't have to do anything. I was told this by someone who is on an extension, and she said that's how EDD did it with her.

I went to a One Stop/Career Center today that has an EDD person there full time. I asked about extensions, and she said that EDD will just send you a new claim form to fill out. No interview involved unless they find something to interview you about. They shouldn't in mine, I've been working part-time, so that should make them happy.

An update on my situation: I had to file a new claim, and my benefits went from $409 a week to $99 a week because it put me in a new base period. I also have not gotten a check, and have to have another phone interview in 3 weeks. This just doesn't seem right to me but what can I do.

Benefits are based on quarters, the last four of the first five, I know, clear as mud. I am not sure what the base period is in California, probably you are looking at earnings reported from April 2008 to April 2009. There were no benefits for the earnings you recieved as an independent contractor. Benefits are based on the earnings reported in the highest quarter.

I have $2037 left in UIB. If I don't work my part-time job, I get $303 per week. I'm just barely making it on that, and I sure hope it doesn't go down with my extension, because I won't be able to pay my rent, let alone my bills. I was hired by another school district, and they've been calling me to work, but they pay the second month after you work. So I'm between and rock and a hard spot with working. I think that I'm going to talk to an EDD person again about my extension, because if it's not the same amount, I'll have to move.

This is making me very nervous.
