Hi All...so i wouldnt say much stuff happens at my house but the strangest thing was my ADT guy mentioning something is interfering with the remote for my alarm system and he has never seen that. some kind of frequency or something

but the other day I noticed the smell of cigs. It happened when I was down there, so I didnt approach the smell (if that makes sense). then it just went away

I remember about a year ago we hired a cleaning lady.....a bit weird but she mentioned i used to clean this house and a very very bad man used to live down here. Didnt hire her after that.

Can smells be partially paranormal or prob just something from my mind? no1 smokes in my house and basement is still under construction. And it was not a smell that lingered, but came and go at a random time

Cigarette/cigar smell can linger for a very long time. Maybe even longer in a basement where the rough wood is exposed. The say that wood never dies. What I mean is that it absorbs the humidity in the air. As the air becomes more humid; wood becomes more humid and the other way around. So the smell of somebody smoking can enter wood and smell like the smoke for many years to come. At times more smell can be released into the air and at other times you will smell nothing (unless you put your nose up against the boards that are harboring the smell). Cigarette smell can linger for a good 10 to 15 years and maybe longer.

How old is your house? Have you had construction workers in your basement when you were not there? Did you buy the house already built or did you build it?

As far as ADT; many electronics have problems. How many times have you replaced a computer or electronic part? They will figure out their problems or you might want to get another company.

Our house is 45 years old. My wife and I were heavy smokers for almost 30 years. We did quit and were smoke free for twenty years. But it took close to 10 to 15 years before we stopped smelling the smoke. Even today, if I put my nose against our windows that are just stained wood, I still think I smell traces of our cigarette smoke. It can be very persistent. I had repainted all of our rooms and many I had to use an enamel 'stain blocker' before applying latex paint. That creosote from the cigarettes would bleed through the paint without the stain blocker.

Have you sheet rocked your basement and painted since you moved in? Once you paint or cover the floor and then install a ceiling and finish your remodeling; then some of the smell should go away. Good luck!

I have definitely had paranormal experiences with the smell of cigarettes. One way to help figure out if it’s from a smoker who used to live there, or whether you are having a paranormal experience, is to ask yourself whether it smells more like a freshly lit cigarette, or like old, stale smoke. You should be able to tell the difference. We’ve all been in a hotel room where the curtains and carpet reeked, or sat next to someone on public transportation whose clothing carried the stench of nasty old smoke that’s been hanging around for a while. That scent is quite different than the smell of a cigarette that’s being smoked in the moment.

When I first moved into an older home, it drove me nuts that although when we first moved in, the house had no lingering smells whatsoever, at times I could smell the telltale scent of someone smoking a cigarette nearby, always in the same room. This was not an old, stale smoke smell, it was the clearly recognizable scent of smoke emanating from a lit cigarette. At first I thought someone outside was smoking, but I looked outside and no one was there. This happened many times. Between times, there was no lingering smell. Finally I realized it was the way that my dad, who had been a lifelong smoker, was saying hi to me and letting me know that he was around. So my advice is, if it smells fresh, ask yourself if you know anyone who has passed on who was a smoker. They may be just trying to get your attention to say hi.

It could be either, or both. But in the realm of the paranormal, this type of thing does happen. Just because every hoofbeat isn’t a zebra doesn’t mean zebras don’t exist.

so its definitely not an old smell like at casinos or hotels. its like a fresh smell...but it only lingers for about 1 - 2 mins then its gone. happened twice only though. I mean i found it alittle odd but figured maybe it was the previous owners, but the house never had a small of "cigarettes" like my car does bc the previous owner smoked in it. But yes you are right there is 2 distinct smells and this is not the one that lingers around.

i remmeber one time when i smelled it that one time upstairs, i asked my wife if she been around a smoker or anything she was like no... she has a smell disorder so she cant smell anything...good or bad haha so im on my own on this

but from the previous reply...its not a persistent smell. i only smelled it twice out of the 4 years ive been in my house and it only lasted 1 - 2 mins

I've smelled cigarette smoke while fishing at night when no one was within a mile. There is something odd about cigarette smoke and how it lingers. Other odors don't seem to behave in the same manner. I have no idea if this is paranormal, or not.

Cigarette smoke is a common paranormal manifestation.

While, as others have said, the smell of cigarette smoke is notoriously difficult to banish, the smell of "fresh" cigarette smoke is quite different from the smell of "stale" smoke.

A characteristics of paranormal smells are 1) rapid onset 2) leaving with out a trace, despite the intensity of the smell. 3. Capriciousness. - they appear at odd times. May go away for good or for a long time, and suddenly disappear.

I have experienced paranormal olfactory manifestations of both perfume and cigarette smoke. Both in places where no one had ever smoked or worn that particular perfume.

There are natural reasons for cigarette smoke to linger as Fisheye and others have said. However, if this was a long term problem, as a non-smoker (assuming that you are) you would have noticed it when you first looked at the house. It would not present suddenly.

There are also certain medical conditions that can cause olfactory hallucinations. You can google them.

Since you chose to post in a supernatural forum, I am taking your post at face value and assuming that you have ruled out natural causes.

I am wondering why you fired the cleaning woman when she told you that a "very, very bad man" used to live there. Since she worked in the house, she might have a wealth of knowledge about it's former residents. Including the bad man.

I'd give her a call.

I grew up in a house where my grandparents smoked. Sometime during middle/high school they both quit. I will occasionally smell "fresh" cigarette smoke in areas where no one has a lit cigarette. (indoors, 3rd floor at work, no balconies or nearby exits). In my home, where no one has ever smoked.

It will typically be detectable for 1-2 minutes and then disappear. Occurs randomly but I'd say a handful of times per year. Less than once a month. Likely less than once every other month.

Maybe. A local restaurant is claimed to be haunted by its owners. They say that the guy who haunts it was a guard at that facility when it was a bank, and he smoked cigars. They don't smoke, nobody else works there, it's a non-smoking facility. Yet, they say they've smelled fresh cigar smoke in the basement at times. They took us on a tour through the place and my wife caught a picture containing an inexplicable point of light. I didn't smell cigar smoke, and my nose is acutely attuned to the putrescent stench of tobacco smoke, fresh or stale. There might just be something to the connection of smells with the paranormal.
