I think everyone is familiar with the urban legend about the hitchhiking girl ghost. There are many different versions. Here is one based on a real person.

Does it really matter what he saw? The fact is, he saw something that caused him to suddenly brake and stop his train, and then get out and scout the tracks ahead of him. Many lives were saved, so who cares if he saw a train, a fog cloud or a mirage of some sort. This is an amazing story regardless.

It was nighttime, and the clerk was alone in his office. Very odd for someone to show up at that hour, and simply walk into the office (private property). Then not leave when told to. The clerk may have felt unsafe at the least, or possibly threatened.

Still, you have a point.

I agree. The fact that he saw something that caused him to slam on the brakes, resulting (he later discovered) in many lives saved, is remarkable. Especially when that "something" turned out to be like a mirage. It's extraordinary.

There are hundreds, maybe thousands, of such stories gleaned from newspaper and magazine articles and chronicled by Charles Fort in:

Book of the Damned
New Lands
Lo!
Wild Talents

All together in one volume.
