American here...If it does go to leave the EU does it take effect immediately or does your Gov. have to some more work? What kind of things will people see in their everyday lives? Just curious...
There is a two year notice period.
The main near term impact will be economic. Probably a fall in the stock market, a fall in the pound against both the Euro and Dollar and a fall in the Euro against the Dollar and a decrease in M&A activity.

I think the transition will be quite long, laborious and complicated.
I haven't read all the details regarding exactly what the UK will be leaving behind; but one important aspect is the European Court of Human Rights. Any British person who is appealing to this organisation for whatever reason, may find their claim will be revoked and handed back to the British courts. The same principle applies to people in jail awaiting appeal from the HCHR - how will they get on I wonder?
Another consideration is what will happen with existing European Directives? Will they be rescinded and replaced with British ones or perhaps none at all?
One noticeable difference will be new passports! I think the latest UK passports include EU details about the holder as a citizen of the EU.
If we pull out i would imagine these passports will be deemed either illegal or out of date; and new passports will be needed - which will mean an extra expense to the holder.
There are probably lots of other examples to consider, but whatever happens "independence" won't happen over night; and could take many years before the UK has absolutely nothing to do with all aspects of the EU.

I'm coming over next month, a fall in the euro vs dollar would be ok.... You people won't go all crazy? riots and the like. You seem pretty calm unless it about football

More money in the pocket, and that's just the start. Less dictatorship, and it is dictatorship, and we'll have politicians that can't blame the EU for what they've chosen to do to us, against us, in their best interest.
American here trying to understand the world these days. Does belonging to the EU mean you don't have your own controls over your own borders, etc? I have definite thoughts about the refugee situation. How would leaving affect that? I am just watching with interest... also I guess this doesn't affect Canada in any way, does it?
Also another questions: why does Ireland not have any say so? Aren't they part of the United Kingdom? If Scotland and Wales have a vote why not Ireland. Sorry, very ignorant here about it all.
