Ignorant American wants know what this party is about. I see them on TV during questions time. Other than being a rather dyspeptic bunch, I am not sure why they exist. I know what Labour and the Conservatives are, but what is this 3rd party about? Is it some middle of the road party or is it some left wing party?

They`re what you want them to be..Opportunists. Having said that I do have a certain respect for Vince Cable...Much of their history originates in my part of the world..

Ahhh, the good old Lib Dems.

They are the remanent of a once great party (the Whigs) in what was (with the Tories) a two party state -

Whig (British political faction) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

But once the working man got a chance to vote and the Labour party came in to existence they fell in to rapid decline (because they were the party of the upper class and of course they were losing their grip on the country.

Labour Party (UK - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

In the 80's they merged with a splinter group of Labour disaffectees (Social Democrats); both parties realising that merging was the only hope they had of staying afloat.

Liberal Party (UK) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

What are they for? Giving us a laugh at how ridiculous politicians can be.
