Sonrise, many tourists go to drink to have a good time, its a culture to many people and a "way of life" Especially when I worked in Spain and did flights to eastern Europe you would see alot of stag parties and people were totally away with it.
I get embarrassed though especially seeing women totally out for the count.
I haven't came across a situation where someone was considered an outcast because they chose not to drink.
Do you honestly know anyone that chooses not to drink?

Umm, my Dad LOL
No one ever says anything or looks at him like he's crazy or anything like that. I can't speak for everyone here but from my experiences people have been fine about it.
I've never known anyone to be shunned because they don't drink. I have a mate who was teetotal for years, but he was still a regular on our pub nights out. To be honest it was more about the socialising than the drink for us. A pub in the UK is more often a place to meet friends for a social drink, rather than a bar where you neck drink after drink.
And regarding smoking, I know far more non smokers than smokers.

I noticed that there are less smokers overall, used to be you couldn't walk on the street two steps without someone's smoke blowing in your direction. People's habits change with each generation and I think a lot can't afford it anymore either.
When I smoked, everyone seemed to as well, now many have quit and many of the young people won't even start.

I know a number of people here that don't drink - they still come out to the pub - pubs here are not about drinking so much as about socialising - in my experience. No one bats an eye at what other people are drinking or aren't drinking, and no one makes a big deal of it.
