So, with light rail being all the rage in many cities nowadays as they grapple with a growing population and poor highway infrastructure that is just a self-defeating proposition ... what cities have heavy rail? Got any pictures?

I ask this only because I grew up in Chicago and haven't been to a city that I noticed had heavy rail besides Chicago, i.e., HUGE locomotives running on electricity or diesel and more often than not sharing the rail with freight. I think there's something magical about them that just gives some people like myself a charge more than simple commuter light rail. Little kids love them too, and it's just this "wow" factor.

I know Atlanta has a few in the works. I didn't know DFW had commuter rail, I just thought they had their DART lines.

The State of Maryland has the Maryland Rail Commuter system (MARC) which serves both the Washingtom DC and Balitimore metro areas. MARC has the Brunswick Line which goes NW from Washington and ends in Matinsburg WVA, The Camden line from Washinton DC to Baltimore. A line from Baltimore to Washington on the AMTRAK line. A final line goes along the AMTRAK line NE from Baltimore to the Maryland-Delaware state line. The Northern Virginia suburban area is served by VRE (Virginia Rail Express) one line goes to Fredricksburg from Washington and the other from Washington to Manassas VA.

Thanks for mentioning this. There is a second commuter line under construction now that connects the new Green line to the Denton County suburbs all the way to the city of Denton. It is called the A-Train. It will be up and running by then end of this year. Another called the Cotton Belt will be up and running by 2013.

Septa which revolves around Philly

Metro North and LIRR which take passengers from up-state New York, Connecticut, and Long Island to NYC
