I'm renting a room in a pretty good place in northern Provo right now, but the owner is planning on selling the house. Also, at 20 minutes, the commute is a bit much for me, and it can be much longer in the evenings due to passing the college.

My job is in southern Provo, and I'm looking for a general area to rent with the following criteria:

1. I'm looking at room rentals, only (no apartments, and I can't afford a house)
2. Quiet... Not too close to the railroad, airport, or highway (and no loud college student parties late at night)
3. Minimizing the driving distance from the south end of Provo
4. Able to see the stars at night (is this possible?)

Just looking at the map, distance-wise, Sunset or Provo South look to be the most convenient in terms of commute distance.

How much insulation from the airport/railroad noise do these locations have?

Would it be better to be looking at places to rent in Springville? That's a bit further, but I would imagine that there would be fewer college students there.

It will be hard to find a room to rent period. It might pay to ask your landlord if he or she knows people in the areas you are considering who might be willing to rent you a room. I don't think you're going to be able to be really picky about the location. Renting out rooms isn't really common in Utah. A lot of houses have attached mother-in-law apartments, but I honestly don't think there are many who rent out single rooms. You're best hope is your landlord and the connections that he/she has. If the landlord can vouch for you and help you, then somebody who might not otherwise consider renting just a room might possibly be convinced. If you might be willing to consider helping an elderly person or providing light housekeeping service to a family, let your landlord know that too.

Ok... If I rent a house and sublet a few of the extra rooms to get the costs down, how does that change the outlook? Winter weather isn't much of a concern, since it'll be over by the time my lease is over.

About how far south do you need to go before the skies start getting somewhat dark at night?

My best guess is that you'd have to be in Spanish Fork or maybe Payson before you'd get away from the light pollution. It sounds like a good idea to rent the house and sublet the rooms if your landlord is OK with it (or doesn't know).
