Hello
I'm a 30 yr female with bf and our 2 kids under 2.
We are thinking of Provo as for our tech startup. We are non l ds and I'm black and he's white couple.
Would we be okay in Provo ? Or should we look for a suburb of nyc instead? We want a safe area with a lower Cost of Living if possible. Any safe quiet suburbs of slc instead? Coming from Vegas area.

SLC has some great suburbs that you'd do well in, but Provo is definitely not one of them. Do not move to Provo. Move to East St. Louis before you move to Provo. Provo is basically the American Mecca of Suburbanite Religious Conservative values.

But plenty of inexpensive SLC suburbs (or the city itself) would fit what you're looking for. Personally I'm a fan of any of Salt Lake County north of about 7000 South. Once you get south of that you start to get into what I call the "Mo-Burbs" (Mormon Suburbs) and the diversity decreases while cultural exclusivity increases significantly over what you'll find in northern Salt Lake County. Also the idea of an unmarried mixed-race couple living together with kids would be frowned upon in many neighborhoods in the Mo-Burbs. You'll not find that as much closer to SLC. Based on your budget and what specifically you're looking for can narrow that down much more.

Would it be fine to commute to Provo I heard that's where the tech talent is ? Like an office there
I have no idea why Provo keeps listing high up as a nice place to live if the culture isn't very inclusive. I'm conservative myself a Christian the fiancé is a rather liberal. Sub1500 for a 2 bedroom for a nicer area we'd pay more up in the 2000 if needed. Any ideas ?

I don't think the inclusiveness of an area is something that is very easily measurable. That's probably why. Yes, it is entirely possible to commute to Provo. You could make the commute fairly easily from Cottonwood Heights, which is a great place to live.

At $1500 for two bedrooms Cottonwood Heights, East Millcreek and Sugar House may all be doable, but Holladay may be out of your price range - all are fairly desirable. For tech, I'd consider an office in Draper or Lehi. The "Point of the Mountain" tends to get a lot of tech buzz, probably moreso than Provo, it's just a bunch of little suburban fiefdoms that alone don't account for many jobs, but combined have quite a the developing tech industry.

I had to read this twice. Deciding between Provo and NYC suburbs strikes me as a very odd choice. I'm hard pressed to think of any 2 places less alike by practically any measure. Regardless, figure on NY area housing being 2x-3x as expensive and property taxes 4x for roughly comparable houses. If you care about schools and safety you'll find few move-in houses out there under $500k and $10k taxes. And you'd be lucky to find that. Post on the Westchester NY and Long Island boards if you haven't already.

Holladay is an eastside Salt Lake City area neighborhood. Parts of it are pretty upscale, other parts not so much. It is bordered by East Millcreek to the north and Cottonwood Heights on the south. All are nice areas.

Default Odd couple of choices...

You've probably moved by now,I wish there were follow-ups so we can find out where folks actually wind up after asking opinions.

If you haven't yet -- Come to Texas! Look at a suburb of Austin where the tech is. Leander, Cedar Park, Round Rock, Jarrell, all waaaaay cheaper than NY and more accepting than UT imho.
