x-Pat, I agree. I would drink soy milk over regular milk any day. But I try to vary it by using some almond milk, some rice milk and some soy. I also want to try hemp milk? Has anyone here had it and how did you like it?
I'll never buy soy milk again, if I can help it.
I found some other hemp milk, which is excellent, imo. It's called "Hemp Bliss", and is grown and manufactured in Manitoba. What is it with those Canadians? Their website has a very informative section on the history, and chemical and nutrional makeup of the plant, and in which states and locations you can buy their products.
I bought the original version, which might be a bit strong if you've never had it before. I also bought the chocolate, of course! They also have vanilla...visually more like cow's milk, I guess.
I love this stuff, and like anything, it's important to get a good quality product (just like olive oil) ~
Oh, and would you mind telling me which food club you belong to? Ordering directly from the manufacturer is sbustantially more than retail! Thank you~~

Asian people have been consuming soy "milk" and other soy products (tofu, miso) for about 1000+ years. How much negative evidence has been uncovered over this long period of time? It seems only anti-soy groups have "negative" information.
I will also point out, and agree, that the food industry puts processed soy derivatives in most foods. See most of the labels of cookies, crackers, fast food ingredients, etc...
I know f_m, for me, I just prefer hemp milk (or drink, if you prefer). Which, BTW, I did not realize was a prime crop in China for at least the same documented time as soy.
Soy is an amazing product. I've never had freshly made tofu, even though we here in Portland (OR) can get relatively fresh, packaged tofu.

Hmm, I wasn't entirely aware of that either (hemp), but it just goes to show that so many things have already been done and proven, and people seem to "forget" about it, and now they are "danger" and "illegal" because there is now lots of money involved. I haven't had hemp, only rice and almond. However, I usually only like the vanilla kinds, straight soy or almond I didn't really like. I happen to have a hemp belt that has lasted way longer than the cotton ones I had.
A braised tofu dish (in brown sauce with mushrooms and bamboo) from a good Chinese restaurant is amazing.
I switched to soy milk last year and have been loving it ever since. I like the Silk plain and the Silk chocolate.
I had a really great change happen for me once I got off the cows milk. And again, this is personally what happened and my own personal feeling and opinion about soy millk.
I get really grouchy, crampy, etc around that time of month and all of those symptoms have almost gone completely away since making the change. Part that the decision TO change was because I had read and heard on a news / medical program that if you took a soy supplement or drank soy milk that it would help ease those same issues and for women heading into the change of life. I have found it to be true. Plus, I like drinking it. I was VERY lactose intolerant and would get all sorts of issues after drinking cows milk. So, I'm a big advocate advocate of soy milk.
Well that's a lot of good information and links you all have posted, thanks. I have searched around on this topic, but haven't chosen to avoid soy milk for good. Like was said before, drink/ eat soy products in moderation I suppose.
I did try another drink which was almond milk, but for me it was too sweet, and it was the original flavor, not vanilla (Can't remember the brand) The local store also carries hemp milk and for sure I'll have to try it.
Thanks for the replies and keep 'em coming.
Edit- almost forgot. Has anyone here tried Silk Soymilk Mocha or Coffee? Oh my god, addicting. On second thought, don't try them.
I'm lactose intolerant so I don't consume any dairy.
Perhaps I'm slightly allergic to soy products also, because when I eat too much of it (in any form) I get an upset stomach. So, I use Rice Dream for the most part, Chocolate Almond Breeze in my morning coffee (tastes like a mocha latte) and NO DAIRY !
Boy-oh-boy...... I really MISS eating ice cream and cheese

Reason: typo
I started drinking nothing but soy milk, but then I started reading about the negatives and switched back to fat free dairy. I even read somewhere that it can cause gynecomastia in men. That's the last thing I need is "man boobs". LOL

It is just a local "club" in Central MA. We get to order from a huge catalog. THe prices are ok, not great, but you have to buy a whole case of items. We often split cases and the only reason why I participate is that the closest Whole Foods is an hour away. For example the hemp milk is almost $5 at the small health food store. I buy what i can there, but $5 for a small carton of hemp milk, that is just too much. THe buying club charges around $3 or a little over. I am ordering a case this month
I hate dairy milk, gross to me, so I do not consume it.

I was told to lay off the soy milk and soy products after my thyroid stopped functioning. Something in the soy might affect the synthroid, so my doc suggested I be aware of it. I've since stopped using soy milk and use almond milk instead. I also only get tofu as a treat now and then when we get Chinese food for dinner. Otherwise I've found other protein sources for my vegetarian lifestyle.
