I am thinking of moving to Rutland or the immediate area from Biloxi, MS. I have looked it up a bit, and it seems like a fairly good city to live in, but I would like some input from city buffs. For example: The weather, the schools (I have one child entering 4th grade), the employment rate, and anything else I might find useful. If anyone could help with this decision, I'd appreciate it!

If you're asking about Rutland, you're probably going to get a lot of mixed reviews. Personally, I like Rutland. For the positives, everyone I know from Rutland says that although it has a large population it still retains a very neighborly feel. Growing up as a teen in Brandon, Rutland was the only place within a 30 mile radius that offered us something fun to do. The shopping there is quite good for Vermont. The weather is really no worse than any other place in Vermont, and the roads are in better shape in the winter than most. Rutland is quite close to Manchester (great outlet shopping) and to the Green Mountain Forest.

For the negatives, honestly Rutland isn't the most picturesque city. It's a city people live in, not one that postcard makers jump to capture with their cameras. The population in Rutland can be rough. Rutland attracts not only a trashy group of Vermonters, but drug dealers come up from NYC. Rutland really struggles with a bad drug population. There is some rush hour traffic, though it's not as bad as Burlington. I don't know much about the schools, except that Rutland sports teams are generally hated by other schools for their snobbiness (but this may well just be high school sports rivalries). There are opportunities for jobs in Rutland, but make absolutely sure that you either find a job before moving or have ample savings to support yourself before you come.

Hi!

What is a city buff?

Rutland's weather is somewhat milder than the towns immediately surrounding it, which get more snow and wind and have lower temperatures in the winter. Unfortunately, that also means Rutland is hotter in the summer than surrounding towns; unlike me, some are okay with that.

Employment is a chronic issue in Rutland. What kind of work do you do?

As Vermonr mentioned, other threads cover Rutland's offerings and drawbacks fairly thoroughly.

The rougher elements Vermonr described are indeed here, though I'm not constantly aware of it. Whereas I am constantly reminded of Rutland's neighborliness.

I find Rutland picturesque. There are mountain views from nearly anywhere in town, and the old buildings are beautiful. Extensive outdoor recreation is only a walk or short drive away.
