Hi all. My girlfriend and I are looking for quiet and private campgrounds. We're primarily interested in southern Vermont. The ideal campsite would be a basic drive-up where we could set up our tent. We just have a couple of stipulations.

1) Campsites are far apart for added privacy.
2) Hiking in the area.
3) Swimming in the area.
4) Activities like shopping and historical sites in surrounding towns.

Finally, (and I know this is a long shot), we'd like a campground without a lot of children.

Thanks for your time and input!

This is somewhat central in location, but it is one idea.

I don't think Vermont has any, adult only, campgrounds that I have seen in places like Florida. I can suggest some nice campgrounds with everything your looking for but that. if you went before the schools let out, mid-week, that would reduce greatly the amount of familes you might encounter. Emerald lake State Park is very nice. It's just north of Manchester. It looks on a map that it's right next to Rt 7, but it's down the hill and barely seen from the road.

OOps missed the part about *campground without a lot of children.

As stated above try during the week and before school lets out.

There are a lot of pulloffs along some forest service road that people often camp at. The Mt. Tabor Road off of route 7 when it reopens after the mud season is good. You could I suppose hike to Griffith Lake to go swimming there. It's a bit of a hike to the lake but doable. The area around Somerset has a lot of places you can pull off and camp, and it would put you near the reservoir for water. However, I haven't been there since Irene, and that area suffered serious damage. I have no idea if Somerset Road will be open its whole length right now (contact the Green Mt. National Forest about that). In both of these areas you can always find a place that's quiet if you look around away from the crowds, and being in the national forest, there's lots of hiking. Somerset is a bit isolated but it isn't that far a drive from shopping.
