You'll be fine with an automatic. I've never had a stick up here....

If you drive an automatic and your going up a steep hill once your vehicle slows down the transmission will shift automatically to a lower gear. My subie has 2 lower gear shift positions which I use going up and down steep roads. Most automatics have this option.

My Colt did automatically downshift, but it was insufficient. At the time, I was too new at Vermont driving to even know what to do with the two lower gears on an automatic transmission's hand-shifter. I'm sure I never used them.

My 5-speed Jetta set me free. Plus after that I never again found myself in the frustrating situation of needing to drive someone else's vehicle and saying, "Uh, sorry, I don't drive stick." I'm glad I know how. :-)

The only time i've ever used the lower gears is in the Hill Country outside Austin, Texas and outside Asheville, NC in the mountains. The Corolla made it up both times, but its just not used to it.

I bought a set of snow tires for 400 bucks with wheels mounted and balanced. Blizzack Revo yada yada. They work very well. All this being said I may like to get a Subaru as our next vehicle. We need to make room for doggies and babies

I live in the Mtn. of NC (near Asheville) and have an '05 Impreza wagon. It's an awesome car, especailly with the doggies and babies, which I have both of. Also, snowboards, kayaks, mtn. bike, it all fits! Oh, and I'm only 25 so I don't possibly see how I could be a "yuppie" in my car. Of course, I guess our "yuppies" drive huge SUVs with magnetic soccer balls on the back.

I think that it is funny that anyone would put subaru and yuppie in the same sentence. It is kind of like calling a shrimp jumbo...

I would say the Subaru WRX or WRX/STI would be more of a yuppie vehicle.

I was surprized at the prices of Subarus and Hyundai's compared to Toyotas and Hondas. I thought they'd be a lot less, but they're actually pretty close.
I'd rather get a Honda or Toyota, I suspect the savings in maintenance over the years will be great.
