Subaru is actually partially owned by Toyota, so the difference in maintenance might not be so much...

I'd rather get a Honda or Toyota, I suspect the savings in maintenance over the years will be great.
Hyundai is a Korean car company so I don't put it in the same level as a Honda, Suburu or Toyota although it has made great strides the last couple of years.

While Toyota has invested money into Subaru's parent company they are still competing and completely separate car manufacturers.

I have a 1996 Subaru legacy outback wagon with 155,000 miles. I bought it with 105k for $5,000. This has been one of the most reliable cars I have ever owned and is the, with four snow tires, the best snow car I have ever driven. I would recommend looking for a used Subie between 3 and 6 years old. Have an independent mechanic thoroughly inspect the car before and after you purchase. Expect to pay about $500 - $1,000 for the deferred maintenance. Have the timing belts and all hoses replaced, change oil filters and coolant, the tyranny flushed and fluid and filter changed and the differential oils replaced with synthetic. Get the AC system drained, a new dryer installed and the refrigerant replaced. If the windshield is badly scratched replace it as well.

What you will wind up with is effectively a new car at less than 1/2 to 1/3 of the cost of a new vehicle. The savings in interest will pay for all the maintenance updates described above. Keep up with the inevitable corrosion and all the recommended maintenance and you will be able to keep this car for a very long time.

I had owned a 1988 Subaru GL Hatchback for several years and it was amazing in the snow. I believe it was front wheel drive. It was a great car, but circumstances at the time forced me to sell it

Default snow tires?

Here's a total noob question...

Do you have the snow tires put on in or around November and taken off in April? Or do they stay on all year? Probably not I'm guessing. Also, how much do local mechanics charge to change out the tires? Thanks!

November and April are the correct months if you run actual snows. To drive on them all four seasons would just wear them out and also cut your fuel economy. Consider just using a good quality all season radial which work well in all conditions. I run Michellins on my Subaru and also my truck so I only have to worry about rotation and balance to get at least 60,000 miles or more out of them.
