Most of VT is rural except for Burlington and surrounds. The other towns you see are quite small, as in post office, general store and gas station, period.

I would guess that most rural areas in north/snow country will have woodsmoke -- especially when the power goes out. Many people in VT and NH use wood or pellet stoves to help keep their heating bills down. But if you are in a rural area, your neighbor's chimney will be quite far away.

I moved up here to VT from MD (Wash DC suburbs). I have exchanged breathing smog and car exhaust for the cleanest air I have ever lived in. The mountains here are gorgeous and green... but not as high as your rockies.

Be specific about the state when you ask about town names. The New England states have many towns of the same name. It gets confusing.

I live in an area called the Upper Valley on the NH/VT border (includes White River Junction, Hartford, and Norwich VT and Hanover and Lebanon NH). Our little cluster of towns have all the necessities... grocery stores, some big box stores, restaurants, and even a bit of culture (shows, concerts) at Dartmouth college. But drive 5 minutes out of the area and it is quite rural.

It's a 2 hour drive to Boston. Sometimes 3 hours if you get caught in Boston rush hour.

Yeah I would say the wood smoke really depends on your neighbors
the majority of people i know use a wood stove at least part of the time.

But it just takes one person with a smoldering OWB or open hearth (or wood stove), to create a lot of smoke and particulates.

Yes. There are quite a number of restaurants in Hanover and surrounding towns.

What kind of work will you be looking for?

My wife would be restaurant work while I am in multimedia (code, web, video, audio). my skills are in demand in big cities but I am somewhat burnt out on big city life....most smaller towns tend to have limited in my field. But I am mostly west coast so really have no idea in New England

For IT, I would go to Monster.com, CareerBuilder.com or Indeed.com. You might want to put in just the name of the state to see where the jobs are clustered. Anything in Southern NH is probably part of the Boston metro area.

For local to the Upper Valley you can try: Classifieds | Valley News (Valley News)
or
It's Classified: The Region's Most Popular Classified Publication! (It's Classified)

For the Upper Valley, your best bet is Indeed.com IT Jobs, Employment in Hanover, NH | Indeed.com or start looking at the individual sites for the College and Medical Center (biggest employers in the area)

Bear in mind that every town in the UV qualifies as "smaller towns tend to have limited in my field." The job market is tight here particularly for decent paying jobs. It may take some time for find what you are looking for.

Your wife have any problem finding work quickly as the area restaurants always seem to be looking for good help.

On Google Maps Hanover looks like it is a one horse town with a U in it. How many biz are there in the downtown? Is it just one street?
