I've had bad luck in August in VT (probably somewhat random), but I was camping. Rained out. Last year was especially bad, just torrential.

I lived in Portsmouth NH for a decade and owned a condo at Killington for 26 years. I had in-laws with a summer house at Moody Beach in Wells. There are no good east west roads in northern New England so you have to backtrack on I-95 to Hampton NH, take 101 to Manchester, and then 93/89 to Vermont. From Wells, it’s around 2 hours 20 minutes to the Queechee Gorge bridge. From Portsmouth to Vermont, there aren’t many good stopping points. Portsmouth is worth a stop. Maybe the Dartmouth College campus in Hanover.
