Yes, Woodstock is for real. My father's family has lived there for generations. My first job was at a tiny retirement home there, and my grandma's husband is the dispatcher at the police station. Yes, it's touristy but "real" people live there in normal sized houses not just on "estates" (although not in Woodstock Village). I don't think I could handle living there though because there is no real grocery store and besides that it's probably one of the most expensive towns in Vermont. That's my 2 cents!

I've lived in Woodstock for about 20 years (I'm 23 now). The reason all these people are saying they see more out of state plates than they do VT plates is because they come during foliage. People drive from all over the country to see our leaves change colors. Tourism is the #1 industry for all of Vermont, I believe, so you're bound to have that. I have some pictures online of Woodstock and Killington - http://picasaweb.google.com/Kyle.Buser/WoodstockKillington
Woodstock isn't a tourist trap. It's a great place to live and raise a family, but you'll likely get aggrivated during foliage if you have to drive through town (there are ways around it) and are in a hurry.

If anyone has questions, I probably won't be back to this forum, but feel free to email me. Kyle.Buser@gmail.com

I was born and raised in the Northeast Kingdom and Woodstock to us was a "tourist trap". I'm glad to hear that you feel otherwise. I'll admit I've never really stopped in Woodstock, just driven on through, which is how I've formed my opinion of the place. Maybe I'll just have to go down there and actually spend some time (NOT in foliage season ).

I mean no disrespect but I chuckle everytime I see their ads/postcards proclaming the town "the prettiest village in Vermont' or is it New England? They used to have billboards touting the same but of course they had to remove them when Vermont became a billboard-free state(yea!) Pretty tacky if you ask me. My wife tho loves the shopping....

Conversly, the old buildings, even old for Vermont, are cool and last month a friend talked me into going to a HS hockey game there where his grandson was playing so there is some "real" Vermont there, for sure.
